Can computerized prescriptions improve patient safety? We think so
Improving patient safety is just one of the commitments Aurora is making to
the care of our patients. In looking for solutions to national concern over
medication errors, we found exciting answers. For example, Aurora responded by
being one of the first in Wisconsin to offer electronic prescription technology.
This groundbreaking technology was piloted in Aurora clinics throughout
eastern Wisconsin, and is now being extended to Aurora Health Centers
everywhere. Electronic prescriptions have proven to have real benefits to our
patients, physicians and pharmacists. Using pocket-sized handheld computer
systems, they help eliminate handwriting errors, automatically test for negative
drug interactions, and identify patient allergies or adverse reactions in just a
few seconds. This enhances patient safety and convenience, including shorter
pharmacy wait times.
How does it work?
While entering prescriptions on handheld computers, physicians see messages
that alert them to possible problems with the prescription they are writing. And
because the system works in real-time through a wireless network that can
communicate directly with an Aurora Pharmacy, it can help ensure patients get
the right prescription as quickly as possible.
Helping minimize errors on prescriptions to improve patient safety is just
one of the Care Management
Initiatives of Aurora Health Care.
