Milwaukee: A baker's dozen reasons why we never leave
The Milwaukee area has so many lifestyle choices, there's no reason to
go anywhere else! To prove it, here are twelve of our favorites...with
an extra one thrown in for good measure.
1. The
Lake
For sailing, swimming or simply sunning, there's nothing like having
one of the world's largest lakes waiting at your doorstep year 'round.
Lake Michigan moderates our weather and creates a natural recreation
area from one end of town to the other. It's one of several lakes within
the metropolitan area, which means lake living and daily commutes of
1/2-hour or less can peacefully co-exist.
2. A legacy del'arte
When Nineteenth-century beer barons die, what do they do? Leave their
fortunes to the arts! That's why you'll find a world class symphony,
renowned drama and opera companies, and an art museum whose world
renowned architecture surrounds an astounding collection of contemporary
masterpieces.
3. Scoring with
sports
Milwaukee is one of the last of the midsize American towns with enough
fan support to field major league teams in both baseball and basketball.
The proudest dynasty in football is just up the road in Green Bay.
There's also pro hockey, soccer, arena football, big-time college hoops
and a stop on the PGA Tour. We even train America's Olympic speed
skaters at the indoor Pettit Center.
4. Neighborhoods
galore
If country living is your style, Milwaukee offers it within twenty
miles of St. Luke's. Milwaukee's Soho-esque East Side is a bicycle ride
from Aurora Sinai Medical Center. If it's urban charm, suburban comfort
or lake luxury, Milwaukee's got it -- and all as close as a fifteen
minute, uncongested commute.
5.
Entertainment and Dining.
Everyone expects nightlife in Milwaukee, but visitors are often
surprised at how many ways we have to enjoy it. Here are a few favorites
from a selection of over 1,000 nightspots:
The Milwaukee Ale House celebrates the best of
Milwaukee's brewing heritage with fresh brewed ales, specialty
pizzas, live music and outdoor Riverwalk dining right in Milwaukee's
Historic Third Ward.
Want to enjoy a night on the town? Then stop in at
McGillycuddy's located in the heart of Milwaukee's entertainment
center. Munch down on their large burgers or enjoy one of their many
delicious salads. Enjoy a beautiful Milwaukee night out on their
spacious patio area with friends as you enjoy the many drinks they
have to offer.
The name may sound a bit twisted, but Twisted Fork serves
up some seriously good food on Milwaukee's posh Eastside. Dine in on
elegantly prepared meals that will not only please your taste buds
but your pocket book as well.
Once you've been to Eve, you'll agree there's nothing
like it. The classic interior of this two level club/restaurant is
beyond compare. The first floor restaurant serves traditional
American fare (with a twist) and the upper level includes a cocktail
lounge and a DJ inspired club for dancing.
Looking for a premiere sports bar? Major Goolsby's is the
ideal venue to watch “the Big Game.” According to Sports
Illustrated, Goolsby's is the fourth best sports bar in the country.
It's conveniently located across the street from The Bradley Center,
home to the Milwaukee Bucks.
6. Strong
schools
Wisconsin's finest elementary and secondary schools are found among the
30+ school districts in the Greater Milwaukee area. Public schools are
joined by an extraordinarily strong network of parochial and private
institutions. Milwaukee is home to 14 major colleges and universities,
along with a host of technical schools and career academies.
7. A wonderland of
parks
Democratic socialists ruled Milwaukee government until the 1960s, and
their legacy is a jewel of a park system. Highlights include an
internationally recognized zoo, extensive indoor botanical gardens,
sixteen county golf courses and a network of manicured greenspaces
ringing the city.
8.
Strong job prospects
Long a center of precision manufacturing, Milwaukee has
successfully made the transition to information technology without
losing its industrial heritage. Areas of special focus include
automation, medical technology, banking, printing and consumer
products. Also Harley-Davidsons.
9. A season for
everyone
Milwaukeeans can enjoy four distinct seasons every year, yet the
effects of weather are moderated by the presence of Lake Michigan. Only
in January and February do the average daily high temperatures drop
below freezing (January's average of 27 is the coldest of the year.) A
balmy summer is followed by guaranteed fall foliage, and just enough
winter to make owning a fireplace worthwhile.
10. Strong diversity
Ever since the city was a gathering place for Native American tribes,
cultural diversity has been a watchword here. Past migrations of
African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians and Europeans add an increasingly
multi-ethnic richness to the city.
11. Festivals, and more festivals!
A special Festival Park on Milwaukee's lakefront plays host to a
different ethnic festival virtually every weekend of the Summer. The
crown jewel is Summerfest, an 11-day music celebration featuring the
nation's best known artists from classical to hip-hop.
12. A great
state
When people from Minnesota and Illinois go on vacation, they head for
Wisconsin...and we're already here. Hundreds upon hundreds of lakes,
countless acres of deep, untouched forests await your exploration each
weekend. Resorts and tourist attractions exist in plenty, and most are a
day's drive from your home or an evening's cruise from work.
13.
Frozen custard!
This Cadillac of ice creams - creamier, smoother and richer than any
frozen treat you ever ate - is a Milwaukee specialty at over 50 local
stands. We're supposed to be health professionals, it's true, but
there's nothing like a fresh-scooped cone of butter pecan to soothe the
ache of a long rotation. The best news of all: Milwaukee's classic
favorite custard is found at Leon's, located right across 27th Street
from St. Luke's.
