Learning
to be a family physician requires two key ingredients, a motivated
learner and a motivated teacher. Our faculty, with diverse backgrounds
in family medicine, provides excellent role models and teachers for you
during your training. Supporting this work, the campus and department
leaders all have a background in and deep understanding of family
medicine:
Nick W. Turkal, MD, Family Physician, Family
Practice Center (located at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center); President and Chief Executive Officer, Aurora Health Care. Former St. Luke's Program Director
and Family Medicine Associate Chair. Interests: End of Life Care,
Population Health, Care Management, Medical Administration. Dr.
Turkal grew up in Nebraska and graduated from Creighton University
Medical School before coming to Milwaukee for residency training at
St. Michael's Family Practice Residency Program. He ran a solo
practice in Robinson, Illinois before coming to St. Luke's in 1989.
Jeffrey A. Stearns, MD, Family Physician, St.
Luke's Family Practice Center; Medical Director, Medical Education,
Aurora Health Care; Associate Dean, UW School of Medicine and Public
Health. Former Family Medicine Associate Chair. Interests:
Ambulatory Teaching and Community Medicine.
Dennis J. Baumgardner, MD, Family Physician,
St. Luke's Family Practice Center; Professor of Family Medicine,
University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health; and
Director of Campus Research, Training, and Development, Aurora UW
Medical Group and Center for Urban Population Health. Former St.
Luke's Residency Program Director of seven years. Dr. Baumgardner completed
his medical training at the University of Illinois and the Rockford
(IL.) Family Practice Residency Program. He originally joined the
St. Luke's faculty in 1988 as Assistant Director and has had a
variety of roles with the Program and Department over the years. Dr.
Baumgardner has received the Teacher of the Year Award from St.
Luke's residents five times. He focuses his instruction time on
staffing residents and teaching obstetrics, and teaching research
concepts. He received the Wisconsin Academy of Family Practice 1993
Educator of the Year Award, the Pickles Research Award from the
Wisconsin Research Network in 2001, and UW Statewide Department of
Family Medicine Faculty Excellence Award for Leadership in 2004.
Although research is not required in the residency curriculum, many
residents have been inspired by Dr. Baumgardner to become involved
in research projects. He in fact considers research his hobby (it
takes all kinds!) along with outdoor activities and spending time
with his wife and seven children. Interests: Research, and Obstetrics,
Infectious Disease.
John R. Brill, MD, MPH, Family Physician, St.
Luke's Family Practice Center; currently Internal Medicine and
Primary Clekrship Director of UW Medical Students rotating at Aurora
Health Care. Professional Interests: Community Medicine, Preventive
Cardiology, use of humor in teaching, and Education Research. Born
and raised in Marathon City, WI (population 1214), Dr. Brill came to
Milwaukee for education at Marquette University and the Medical
College of Wisconsin. He completed his residency and a faculty
development fellowship at the St. Luke's program in 1996. In 1999
Dr. Brill received the Hanson Award, given annually to a junior
faculty member who has significantly contributed to the department
in the areas of teaching, scholarship and patient care. He completed
a Master of Public Health degree and also became Program Director in
2001. Current interests include implementing the program's new
Family Medicine curriculum. This rotation focuses on training in the
areas of community health, behavior health and practice management,
through application to the most common office diagnoses seen by
family doctors. Dr. Brill is currently the Vice-President of the
Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians, and chair of the
Resident/Student Committee. Other interests include wrestling with
three children (and occasionally dog and wife), the Beatles, and
science fiction.
Aamir Siddiqi, MD, Associate Program Director
and Medical Director Central City Site at Aurora Sinai Medical
Center, Family Medicine. Vice-President Medical Staff, Aurora Sinai
Medical Center, Associate Program Director and Educational Coordinator. Interests:
Medical Informatics, Curriculum Development, and Computers. Dr.Siddiqi
graduated from Aga Khan Medical University, Karach, Pakistan in
1989. Before coming to the U.S, he was working as an instructor in
the Department of Community Medicine at the Aga Khan University. He
finished his residency training at the St.Luke's Family Medicine
program and joined the faculty. His clinical practice is at the
Family Care Center (located at Aurora Sinai Medical Center). He is an Associate Professor with
the University of Wisconsin. His administrative roles include,
Associate Director-St.Luke's Family Medicine Program, Residency
Coordinator-Central City Site, Vice President Medical Staff Aurora
Sinai Medical Center, and Chair of the Credential Committee, Aurora
Sinai Medical Center. He enjoys full spectrum of family medicine and
takes a special interest in medical student and resident training.
Elizabeth Bade, MD, Family Physician, St.
Luke's Family Medicine Residency. Dr. Bade received her medical
degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Bade graduated
from St. Luke's Family Medicine Residency in 2006. Interests include
Cooperative Philoosophy with patients and their health care,
Community Based Medicine, Public Health, Women's Health and
Hospice/end of life care.
Terese Bauer, MD, family Physician, Walker's
Point Community Clinic. Dr. Bauer joined the faculty in 2007 after
completing her residency at St. Luke's Family Medicine Residency
Program. She is responsible for the pediatric curriculum. her
medical interests include global health and quality health care for
the underserved,. Dr. Bauer enjoys spending free time exploring the
great outdoors with her growing family.
Rambha Bhatia, MD, Family Physician, Associate
Professor
Dr. Bhatia joined the department in 1991. She enjoys traveling and
reading. Interests: Integrative and alternative medicine,
meditation, diverse population in all ages including underserved.
Jacob Bidwell, MD, Associate Program Director
Aurora St. Luke's Family Medicine Residency Program, Family
Physician, St. Luke's Family Practice Center. Medical Director,
Walker's Point Community Clinic, Medical Director, Johnston Primary
Care Clinic, Assistant Professor, UW Dept of Family Medicine, St.
Luke's Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Bidwell became a UW
Medical School Assistant Professor of Family Medicine after
graduating from the St. Luke's Family Medicine Residency Program in
2002. He coordinates the Adult Medicine Curriculum. His primary
interest is in urban underserved primary care.
William G. Dralle, MD, Family Physician, St.
Luke's Family Practice Center; Assistant Director. Interests:
Geriatrics, Long Term Care (certified medical director) practice
management (also partner in a private practice.) Dr. Dralle is a
graduate of Universidad Tecnologica de Santiago and former chief
resident of the Good Samaritan Family Practice Residency. He is the
recipient of the 2002 National Research Corporation's Customer
Choice Award as a top Family Practice Physician. His three daughters
and one son keep his life interesting when away from the office.
Karl Droese, MD, Practices family medicine at
the Aurora Wiselives Clinic. Dr. Droese received his medical degree
from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He completed family
medicine training at the St. Luke's Family Medicine Residency
Program. Dr. Droese provides health care to patients of all ages.
Special interests include obstetrics and medical informatics.
Seth M. Dubry, MD, Program Director Aurora St.
Luke's Family Medicine Residency Program, Family Physician, St.
Luke's Family Practice Center. Interests: Men's Health, Preventive
Health and Wellness, Sports Medicine, and Medical Education. Dr.
Dubry grew up in Tucson, AZ. He received his undergraduate degree in
Biology from Grinnell College and returned to Tucson to receive his
MD from the University of Arizona Medical School. He completed his
Family Medicine residency at Shady side Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.
Dr. Dubry was in private practice for four years before joining the
faculty at the St. Luke's Family Medicine Residency. His
responsibilities have included the position of Medical Student
Coordinator for the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and
Public Health
Department of Family Medicine. In his
free time he enjoys weightlifting, reading and sports. Dr. Dubry
also loves to travel and is a frequent flyer junkie.
Jon Englund, MD, Family Medicine at the Aurora
Wiselives Center and Sports medicine at Aurora Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Englund received his medical degree from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. He then completed a Family Medicine Residency at
the St. Luke's Family Medicine Redisency Program. He also completed
a Primary Care Sports medicine Fellowship at the University of Notre
Dame in 2006. De. Englund provides comprehensive health care to
patients of all ages. Special interests include Sports medicine,
International Health, and Evidence Based Medicine.
David P. Gaus, MD, MPH/TM, Family Physician,
Part-time faculty member. International Rotation Coordinator.
Currently resides in Ecuador, South America as Executive Director of
Andean Health & Development, an international NGO developing
sustainable models of rural healthcare in developing countries. Born
and raised in Milwaukee, David attended Marquette High School and
the University of Notre Dame, graduating with a BA in accounting. He
did volunteer work in Ecuador for two years and then returned to the
US for medical training, which he completed at Tulane University,
graduating AOA. He also completed a Master's Degree in Public Health
& Tropical Medicine at Tulane. He completed his residency at the St.
Luke's program in 1995 and subsequently joined the faculty full-time
for 2 years before finally moving to Ecuador in July of 1997. Dr.
Gaus returns each summer (July/August) to work fulltime at St.
Luke's FPC. Through the international rotation, he also works with 4-year UW students and Family Medicine Residents from around the State
at his hospital in rural Ecuador. He is also National Advisor for
ALSO in Ecuador. Interests include mountain
climbing and Real Chili (when in Milwaukee).
Paul M. Maes, DO, Assistant Clinical
Professor, DFM Coordinator for Osteopathic Program (DO), Co-Director, Geriatrics Curriculum, St. Luke's Family
Medicine Residency Medical Director, Aurora Wiselives Clinic,
Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.
Steve Ohly, RN, NPC, Nurse Practitioner and
Manager, Madison Street Outreach Clinic and Community Health
Programs. Interests: Poverty Medicine, Access to Care.
Kristen Reynolds, MD, Family Physician,
Wiselives Center for Well-being; Assistant Professor, St. Luke's
Family Practice Residency. Professional interests: Nutrition,
Women's Health and Sports Medicine. Born and raised in Menomonee, WI.
Kristen graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical
School in 1999. She completed her Family Medicine Residency at St.Luke's in 2002, and subsequently joined the faculty. The majority
of her time is spent practicing the full spectrum of Family
Medicine, including Obstetrics, at the Aurora Wiselives/Center for
Well-being in Wauwatosa. The clinic also offers complementary
services such as chiropractic, acupuncture, massage and craniosacral
therapy. She enjoys teaching residents and medical students at the
residency clinic, and is currently researching fatigue and iron
deficiency in women. Her free time is spent with family and friends,
playing ultimate frisbee, traveling and reading.
Rebecca A. Schultz, Family Nurse Practitioner,
Clinical Associate Professor, UW-DFM,
St. Luke's Family Practice. Becky's rural southwest Wisconsin
hometown is Darlington, Wisconsin. Her immigrant maternal grandma
(from a small Swiss mountain village) was very interested in family,
natural healing, healthy eating, spiritual commitment, self-care and
hiking. During high school, she worked with the local family
physician and became interested in healthcare. Together this
background laid the groundwork for becoming a Family Nurse
Practitioner. As a FNP in a Family Medicine Residency, she is able
to blend her interest in providing direct primary care, working with
faculty and resident physicians, as well as other students. She
believes in the multi-disciplinary team concept of healthcare
delivery while integrating a mind-body-spirit holistic approach to
her practice and work. She is involved with a wide variety of
committees, which include: Quality Improvement (Co-Chair), Faculty
Search Committee, and the Clinic Advisory Council. Many other
projects, committees, educational and leadership activities are also
a part of her role. Areas of professional interest include: Wellness
/ health promotion, prevention, smoking cessation, ADHD, women's
health, quality improvement, teaching and integrative health
practices. Areas of personal interest include: Family, hiking,
running, skiing, nature, guitar playing, reading, knitting, & cats.
Lisa Sullivan Vedder, MD, Family Physician,
Family Care Center (located at Aurora Sinai Medical Center), Family
Practice Center (located at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center),
Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, Family Care
Center (located at Aurora Sinai Medical Center). Dr. Sullivan Vedder
is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of
Medicine and completed her Family Medicine residency at St. Luke's
Medical Center in Milwaukee. She joined the faculty in 2003 and is currently providing
full-spectrum primary care including obstetrics in her clinical
practice. Special interests include underserved medicine,
pediatrics, women's health and preventive medicine.
Glenda Sundberg FNP-CS APNO - Aurora St.
Luke's FPC. A Family Nurse Practitioner who has been with the
department since 1997. Past interest has been patient education and
resident orientation. She now works primarily in a clinical capacity
two days per week. She enjoys diverse patients population especially
the Spanish-speaking patients.
Geoffrey R. Swain, MD, MPH, Associate
Professor of Family Medicine at UW Medical School of Public Health, a Scientist at the Center for Urban Population
Health, and Associate Medical Director of the City of Milwaukee
Health Department (MHD). Dr. Swain is a boardcertified Family
Physician with extensive clinical, teaching, research, health
policy, and leadership experience, including as academic medical
faculty since September 1990, and public health administration at
MHD since December 1993. Dr. Swain serves on a number of statewide
and regional groups, including the Board of Directors of the
Wisconsin Public Health Association. Before developing his focus on
public health, Dr. Swain was a faculty member at the St. Mary's
Family Practice Residency in Milwaukee, and prior to that he
provided full-time direct patient care at a Milwaukee-area
staff-model HMO.
Brian K. Wallace, MD, Family Physician and
Medical Director, St. Luke's Family Practice Center. Interests:
Sports Medicine, Practice Management. Brian K. Wallace MD, graduated from the University of
Wisconsin Medical School in 1984; and completed his family practice
residency training at St Luke's in 1987. He was in private practice
in Mequon, WI until 1991, when he joined the faculty of the St.
Luke's Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Wallace is the Medical
Director for the St. Luke's Family Practice Center, which is
currently staffed by 35 faculty, resident physicians, and family
nurse practitioners. He has also served as Medical Director for
Student Health Services at Concordia University since 1987, and Alverno College from 1992 until 2000. He has special interests in
sports medicine, and performance improvement. He developed, and
teaches the formal required curriculum in sports medicine at the St.
Luke's Family Medicine Residency Program. He has co-chaired the
Performance Improvement Committee at the Family Practice Center
since 1993, and chaired the Milwaukee Dept of Family Medicine
Committee on Faculty Standards. Dr. Wallace is blessed with a wife,
Julie, who is an obstetrical nurse, and two sons, Zachary and
Grayson.
Alan S. Wolkenstein, MSW, LCSW, Clinical
Professor of Family Medicine and Coordinator of Behavioral Sciences
Education, Co-Founder of the FORUM; Teachers of Behavioral Sciences
in Family Medicine.{1980}Co-Recipient of Career Innovations In
Clinical Teaching Award/ 20th Forum For the Behavioral Sciences In
Medical Education, 1999. Interests: The Bio-Psychosocial Model of
