TRAINING AND PRACTICE FACILITIES
The two campus sites of our fellowship programs - Aurora Sinai Medical Center and Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, provide a rich and challenging training experience at bedside and at the laboratory bench through the synergistic combination of leading-edge technology and the accumulated experience of two outstanding programs.
To communicate instantaneously with hospitals and clinics statewide, the Aurora Sinai Medical Center and Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center campuses rely on the Wisconsin Health Information Network (WHIN). Started in 1993, this system has been a model in the development of a nation-wide medical information superhighway. In addition, our clinical facilities and offices at the two hospitals are linked together by a local area network.

Located on the Aurora Sinai Medical Center campus, the Milwaukee Heart Institute was designed as the state’s only free-standing cardiac care facility and integrates a spectrum of cardiovascular services with the laboratory, clinical, and office facilities of the medical faculty and support staff.
MHI - A Closer Look
As the main site of training, here is a closer look at the Milwaukee Heart Institute (MHI) - floor by floor. Since 1993 when it opened, the Institute - with its architecturally distinctive facade of Milwaukee "Cream City" brick accented by green glass and green slate - has been a landmark of the downtown cityscape.
MHI is linked by skywalks to the Outpatient Health Center and to the main hospital building of Aurora Sinai Medical Center (ASMC) for the "one-stop" convenience of outpatients and referring physicians and for ready access in the care of critically ill, hospitalized patients.
MHI - Lower Level, Exercise and Education
Rehabilitation and health assessment/promotion programs are on the foundation level, featuring a high-tech exercise area, patient library, classroom and auditorium. Medical records and a mechanical area are also on this level.
MHI - First Floor, Consultation and Initial Diagnosis
General reception, pharmacy and outpatient reception/waiting areas. Beyond is a diagnostic/pre-procedural work-up zone: cardiac and arrhythmia clinics, laboratory, x-ray, and ECG/Holter monitoring.
MHI - Second Floor, Noninvasive Diagnosis
Found here are a multi-purpose patient lounge and various diagnostic services: nuclear cardiology and stress testing, echocardiography laboratory, peripheral vascular laboratory, pacemaker clinic, and ambulatory monitoring. Administrative offices and a boardroom are also on this level.
The nuclear laboratory has state-of-the-art gamma camera systems, most with a dedicated computer; an Elscint multipurpose single-headed camera; larger, Elscint dual-headed field rotational cameras; two smaller Elscint portable field cameras; and two Scinticor multicrystal cameras for blood pool radionuclide angiography and myocardial perfusion studies. There are dedicated multicrystal gamma cameras in the Catheterization Laboratory (and in the nearby Winter Research Building). The nuclear lab at MHI is the first one in Wisconsin to be certified by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories.
The Echocardiography and Noninvasive Peripheral Vascular Laboratories are equipped with several Hewlett Packard imaging systems with capabilities for both transthoracic and transesophageal studies as well as for noninvasive peripheral vascular imaging. The echo lab at MHI is the first hospital lab in Milwaukee to be certified by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL).
MHI - Third Floor, Invasive Labs and Recovery
Found here are a family waiting room, physician consultation rooms, 14 private recovery rooms (each with a TV/VCR and monitoring equipment), two cardiac catheterization laboratories, two electrophysiology laboratories, a multi-purpose laboratory (peripheral disease/angiography), and nursing stations. Laboratories are ergonomically encircled by support staff, drug, equipment and supply areas.
In the CARE (Cardiac Ambulatory Recovery) Center, cardiology and electrophysiology patients may remain until 8 p.m., after which they are discharged or admitted to the hospital, easily accessible via skywalk on the same level.
Aurora Sinai Medical Center MHI has two Cardiac Catheterization labs, one Peripheral/Cardiac Catheterization and two Electrophysiology laboratories.
MHI - Fourth Floor, Physician Offices and Suites
On the top level, support staff carries out the administrative, research, educational, clerical, and billing aspects of patient care.
Hospital Cardiac Care - Aurora Sinai Medical Center Clinical Units
A skywalk connects the Milwaukee Heart Institute (MHI) to the hospital’s 5 cardiac care clinical units, which are close to operating theaters. There are 12 intensive care and 12 cardiovascular intensive care beds in addition to 37 medical and surgical telemetry beds.
ER and Surgical Suites
In the emergency department are 10 triage beds, 2 psychiatric care beds, 4 trauma beds, 9 critical care beds, 15 treatment beds, and 5 observation beds. In the outpatient tower annex, directly across from MHI, there are 15 surgical suites, 3 of which are fully equipped for open-heart surgical procedures.
ASMC has 233 hospital beds.

The Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center (ASLMC) campus is a more traditional arrangement of three professional office buildings that adjoin Wisconsin’s largest private hospital (founded in 1903), internationally known for its expertise in heart care.
The 1998 Mercury Awards (of America’s Health Network) ranked ASLMC first among all Milwaukee hospitals in cardiology, oncology, and orthopedics, with an overall ranking of first place. This made ASLMC one of only two hospitals in the United States to achieve this ranking.
Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center has an interventional cardiologist and full catheterization staff on site 24 hours a day, every day. ASLMC is the only hospital in Wisconsin to offer this kind of around-the-clock heart care. With 24/7 heart care, patients are assessed immediately, minimizing time between arrival and an angioplasty to open their blocked artery. This is referred to as "door to balloon time," and ASLMC is striving to achieve the lowest "door to balloon time" in the state. One of the state’s largest community care hospitals, Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, has a total of 76 critical care beds (CICU, CVICU, PACU and TFICU), 29 of which are for cardiovascular intensive care, transplant patients, and for post-anesthesia recovery.
Catheterization and EP Laboratories
There are five laboratories for electrophysiologic studies, ten for cardiac catheterization diagnostic studies and interventions.
ER and Surgical Suites
In the emergency department are beds for up to 38 patients; 6 of 21 surgical suites are equipped for cardiac procedures.
ASLMC has 983 hospital beds.
