Geriatrics Fellowship Program
What is geriatrics?
The term Geriatrics was coined in the early part of the 20th century
by a New York physician by the name of Ignatz Nascher. Geriatric
medicine focuses on health promotion, prevention and treatment of
disease and disability in later life.
Geriatric Fellowship trains doctors to prevent and manage the unique
and, oftentimes, multiple health concerns of older adults. Older persons
mat react both emotionally and physically to illness and disease
differently than younger adults. Geriatricians are able to to treat
older patients, manage multiple disease symptoms, and develop care plans
that address the special health care needs of older adults. Geriatrics
fellows are trained to approach the patient holistically often with a
multidisciplinary team of specialists.
There are approximately 9,000 geriatricians in the United States.
Geriatricians focus on patient's function and not solely on individual
diseases. In comparison to other physicians who may see a large number
of seniors, Geriatricians keep up to date on new research in longevity
and thus minimizing the ravages of old age. Geriatricians are advocates
for seniors and provide education to other health care workers.
The program
The Aurora Geriatrics Fellowship Program prepares its graduates to
provide comprehensive, coordinated health care services to people over
age 65. The program is designed in response to the changing physical,
social and emotional needs of this fascinating, diverse and growing
patient population.
Center for Senior Health and Longevity is an organization that has created a
nationally recognized model for evaluation and management in geriatric
medicine. The Institute has also become known for its caring commitment
to patients and families throughout Southeastern Wisconsin. Both the
Institute and its fellowship program are located at Aurora Sinai Medical
Center, an academic hospital affiliated with the University of Wisconsin
Medical School and located in downtown Milwaukee.
An Aurora Geriatrics fellow works within a team of patient care
professionals, including nurses, social workers, pharmacists,
therapists, pastoral care providers and home health professionals. This
team approach allows the program to offer a range of specialty services
which enhance both the fellow's educational experience and the quality
of patient care.
Practice areas
Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) Unit
An inpatient unit within the Aurora Sinai Medical Center campus, the
ACE Unit is dedicated to the care of acutely ill older adults. The goal
of the unit is to prevent the decline in cognitive and physiological
function so often associated with hospitalization. A faculty
geriatrician, who leads a multi-disciplinary team which coordinates care
for each patient using sound geriatrics principles, oversees the ACE
Unit. The Aurora Geriatrics Fellow not only follows patients admitted to
the geriatrics service on the ACE Unit, but also has the opportunity to
oversee the unit in place of the faculty member.
Geropsych Rotation
The Aurora Geriatrics Fellow spends one month of
training in the Geropsych Clinic and in a consultative role for
inpatients. Time is spent with a trained Gerophychiatrist at one of the
Aurora hospitals.
Rehab Unit
The Aurora Sinai Rehab Unit is an inpatient physical medicine and
rehabilitation facility specializing in intensive therapy services for
qualified patients. The unit is organized around a team approach, with
the team including two board certified physiatrists and a large
complement of OT/PT/speech pathologists. The team's work centers around
“Easy Street,” a state-of-the-art facility which offers the chance to
practice rehab medicine in a setting as close as possible to a
real-world environment. On Easy Street, patients will find a bus, a car,
a theater, a grocery store and a bank, as well as re-creations of a home
kitchen, a bathroom and a bedroom. The Aurora Geriatrics Fellow spends
one month of their training rotation within this setting, as well as
providing rehab consultations in the inpatient and outpatient areas.
Nursing Home
The Aurora Geriatrics Fellow spends two and a half days per month
training at Sunrise Care Center; a nursing home directed by one of our
faculty members, whom is also an experienced and well known
geriatrician, Dr. Richard Kane.
