The mission

The mission of the Aurora Health Care Internal Medicine Residency Program is to promote quality medical care of the adult by developing within its trainees an outcome-based and humanistic approach to patient care. Learning, scholarly activity and clinical practice will be integrated within an educational framework which will serve as the foundation for any career in internal medicine.

The knowledge, skills and attitudes developed during these years of training will be maintained through the process of self-directed learning.

The Internal Medicine Residency Program will demonstrate a commitment to both the individual and community, utilizing the full spectrum of the Aurora Health Care system and will serve as a resource for improving the accessibility and quality of medical care for the people of Southeastern Wisconsin.

The vision

Outcome-based/quality improvement

An outcome-based approach to both education and practice will require the development of specific skills within the trainees and will include:

  1. medical informatics
  2. health service research
  3. study design
  4. critical reading
  5. shared decision making

An on-going program of quality improvement will be applied to educational, institutional and patient care outcomes.

Humanism

Developing a humanistic approach to health care will require instilling within the trainee an attitude of patient advocacy. This will involve the recognition that psychosocial aspects of illness are as relevant to quality patient care as the biomedical aspects, necessitating the development of knowledge and skills in the following areas;

  1. doctor/patient communication
  2. behavioral techniques
  3. medical ethics
  4. medical/legal issues
  5. cross-cultural awareness
  6. the health care system
  7. public health issues

Community involvement

The program considers social responsibility to be an important attribute of its trainees. Towards this end, the program will coordinate efforts between Aurora Health Care and community leaders to involve its trainees in efforts aimed at improving the well being of the area population.

Self-directed learning

The ongoing education of the program's graduates will be considered essential for continuing individual quality improvement. Key to this will be developing and maintaining a high level of motivation towards self-directed learning.
