Women's health services
Aurora Health Care has designated the Aurora Sinai Women's Health
Services as one of its “Key Services.” The modern, updated physical
facilities utilized by Women's Health Services are among the best in the
City of Milwaukee. They include labor suites, operating rooms, c-section
rooms and recovery rooms where outstanding low-risk and tertiary care
services in Obstetrics and Gynecology are provided. We are proud to say
that Women's Health Services is one of the largest and best delivery
services of its kind in the State of Wisconsin.
Gynecological
services
The general gynecology program emphasizes preventive health care and
health maintenance for women as well as the surgical and medical
management of gynecological disease.
Residents rotate through general gynecology clinics as well as
specialty clinics and participate in inpatient care on general
gynecology, gynecological oncology, urogynecology and
endocrinology-infertility services.
General gynecology experience is provided in the resident continuity
clinics. The residents are encouraged to develop a panel of patients for
longitudinal care over the four years.
Patients from the resident continuity clinics as well as private
patients from the full-time, part-time and voluntary faculty receive
medical and surgical management of gynecological disease on the
inpatient gynecological service at Aurora Sinai Medical Center.
Experience in all surgical approaches is provided including
transabdominal surgery, transvaginal surgery and operative laparoscopy.
A day surgery unit and an outpatient minor procedures unit are used for
much of the minor and laparoscopic surgery.
Additional gynecological surgery experiences are scheduled at
institutions outside of Aurora Sinai Medical Center. One other Aurora
hospital in Milwaukee, the Aurora Women's
Pavilion at Aurora West Allis Medical Center, provides concentrated experience in major gynecological surgery
and oncology.
Residents gain experience in colposcopy and the diagnosis and
treatment of patients with vulvar and cervical disease and neoplasia.
Experiences include colposcopy, LEEP, laser, cryotherapy and medical
management.
The Continence Center is staffed by a faculty urogynecologist and
trained nursing staff. Residents develop expertise in urodynamic
testing, the complete evaluation of urogynecologic complaints and
advanced pelvic surgery.
Infertility/endocrinology and family planning - Residents gain
experience in the Advanced Institute of Fertility, a private office at
St. Luke's Medical Center, and a busy reproductive endocrinolgy and
infertility service at West Allis and Green Bay. The
director of the Advanced Institute of Fertility is a reproductive
endocrinologist and part-time faculty member. Residents learn all
assisted reproductive technologies including IVF. Diagnostic procedures
include cytogenetic testing, transvaginal ultrasound, egg retrieval,
office hysteroscopy and HSG. Family planning is offered in all
ambulatory settings and in the clinics of Planned Parenthood Association
of Wisconsin, Inc.
Gynecological oncology - Our residents are integral members of
our busy Gynecological Oncology service at West Allis and Aurora St.
Luke's Medical Center. They participate in all aspects of GYN
malignancy, diagnosis, care, and all aspects of patient outcomes.
Primary care - Primary care experience is an integral part of the Obstetrics and
Gynecology Residency Program, as are continuity clinics. In addition, a
core of rotations in primary care both ambulatory and inpatient have
been developed. Experience in emergency medicine and ambulatory
geriatrics reinforce the primary care experience. Rotations in general
endocrinology, breast health, infectious diseases and psychiatry are
also incorporated into the primary care curriculum.
OB/GYN and Midwifery obstetric services
Approximately 3,000 infants are born each year at Aurora Sinai Medical
Center. With the large number of births, opportunities abound for the
practice of preventive as well as diagnostic and urgent obstetrical
patient management.
The Inpatient Obstetrics Unit is the focus of obstetrical
training. The unit consists of labor, delivery, recovery rooms (LDR),
maternal fetal intermediate care rooms (MFIC), critical care, surgical
rooms and a recovery room. The Inpatient Postpartum Unit with a
well-born nursery completes the Inpatient Obstetric Unit. Any woman who
has delivered in an LDR suite or is post-cesarean delivery is admitted
to this unit for her postpartum stay. The unit is fully equipped to
handle all high-risk obstetrical patients as well as normal newborns.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is one of the finest Level
III perinatal intensive care centers in southeastern Wisconsin.
Intensive care for the high-risk infant is provided by a
multidisciplinary team comprised of neonatologists, registered nurses,
respiratory therapists, occupational therapists and social workers. An
intermediate care nursery is available to care for infants with medical
problems who do not require intensive care.
Aurora Women's Pavilion at West Allis Memorial Hospital is a new tertiary care center within
the Aurora system. The estimated 3,000 deliveries per year will be used
to complement and supplement residents' OB experience.
Obstetrical Clinics include low-risk patients assigned to
residents in their continuity clinic and high-risk specialty and
prenatal diagnostic clinics. The obstetrical clinics provide a
comprehensive obstetrical care program which involves nutritionists,
social workers, and registered nurses in addition to residents. A
specialty program utilizing a perinatologist is available for high-risk
obstetrical care.
The Perinatal Assessment Center provides extensive outpatient
antenatal testing, genetic counseling and prenatal diagnostic services.
Amniocentesis, ultrasonography, and other clinical techniques are
offered. Residents also rotate in medical genetics at a private genetics
office. The Perinatal Assessment Center includes dedicated OB/GYN
Ultrasound units available for diagnostic and intervention purposes.
Obstetrical Critical Care consists of intensive care dedicated
to the care of critically ill obstetric patients within the Women's
Health Services area.
A faculty member who is board certified in maternal-fetal medicine as
well as critical care medicine teaches and supervises residents in the
care of these high-risk patients. This unit has the capability for
invasive monitoring, and patients are managed by perinatalogists and
appropriate medical consultants.
Midwifery
program
The midwives of the Aurora University of Wisconsin Medical Group (AUWMG)
provide prenatal care and deliver approximately 600 women each year.
Primary preventive and gynecologic care is also provided. The services
provided by the midwives support resident education by enabling
residents to care for patients with a higher level of risk and serving
as a major referral source to the residents.
