Carly Bates, Pharm.D.Current resident – Carly Bates, Pharm.D.

Previous education: PharmD. from the University of Illinois at Chicago

Short bio: I grew up in Spring Grove, IL (which is right on the border between Illinois and Wisconsin). I went to McHenry County College for 2 years before starting at UIC. I enjoy lots of different activities which range from cooking to geocaching (it's awesome, google it :) to anything outside.

What factors did you consider most important when choosing a residency? I wanted a residency that could provide many different experiences at various locations. I also looked at places with larger residency classes and well-established programs.

Why Aurora? I think it was that my beliefs fit with Aurora's overall vision and priorities that really drew me to the program. When I met the past residents at Midyear and during interviews, it really seemed like they were enjoying the experience while still working hard and learning a lot.

Current rotations:

  • Internal Medicine
  • Adult Medicine
  • Neurology clinic
  • Administration
  • Cardiothoracic transplant
  • Drug Use Policy
  • Inpatient oncology
  • Geriatrics
  • Psychiatrics

Year-long project: Analyzing computerized alerts, such as drug-drug interactions, for information and recommendations regarding what is flagging, for whom it is flagging, what the response is, and what our next steps should be to improve patient care and minimize alert fatigue.

Future plans: Right now I'm trying to learn as much as I can and have as many experiences as possible so I can determine what practice setting I enjoy the most. My future plans are still TBD, but I know this residency will help me figure it out. I'm keeping my eyes open for lots of different opportunities!
