Betty FangCurrent resident – Betty Fang, Pharm.D.

Previous education: Pharm.D. from the University of Wisconsin – Madison

Short bio: I was born in a small town in southern China, and came to the United States when I was 10 years old. I then spent the next 10 years in the busy windy city of Chicago, and completed my pre-pharmacy coursework at the University of Illinois at Chicago. A desire for change of scenery led me to the beautiful campus of UW-Madison, and now my most recent home – Milwaukee.

What factors did you consider most important when choosing a residency? The most important factor to me was the variety of opportunities available to me as a resident, and the projects I will be working on are applicable to the career that I am pursuing.

Why Aurora? Aurora’s community residency is the perfect blend of community and inpatient pharmacy worlds. I am able to engage in multitudes of clinical service opportunities with newly discharged patients, and maintain the relationships I build with my patients that I see every month.

Current rotations: All of my rotations are longitudinal, including disease state management, immunizations, medication therapy management, and practice management. I dedicate one day per week as the “Clinical Pharmacist” at the Aurora St. Luke’s Outpatient Pharmacy, where my main responsibilities include blood pressure screenings, transplant discharge consults, smoking cessation counseling, compounding and answering in-depth questions from patients and other healthcare providers. I spend one day a week at the Aurora Sinai’s Family Practice Clinic. I also have the option to spend another day a week in the anticoagulation or anticonvulsant clinic for three months. My staffing responsibilities are every third weekend at the outpatient pharmacy.

Year-long project: “Creating and implementing specialized pharmacy services for neurology patients.”

Future plans: I would love to do what my residency offers – a few days at the outpatient pharmacy, and the rest of the week at a clinic. I would hope to have a position that will allow me to create and implement valuable ambulatory pharmacy services in a large health system.
