Current
resident – Janel Larew, Pharm.D.
Previous education: Pharm.D. with a Concentration in Diabetes
from Drake University in Des Moines, IA
Short bio: I was born and raised in the Milwaukee area and am
currently living in West Allis. In my spare time, I love being outdoors,
cooking with my new husband, reading, and spending time with family and
friends.
What factors did you consider most important when choosing a
residency? It was very important to me to choose a program that
offered a variety of both inpatient pharmacy experiences and clinical
ambulatory care experiences. I also wanted a program that focused
heavily on resident education. The size of the residency class also
played into my decision.
Why Aurora? I liked the variety of opportunities that exist
within the Hospital Practice Residency program at Aurora. It allows you
to experience different practice settings, work with a large group of
dedicated preceptors, and be part of a large residency class. There are
a variety of specialty rotations to choose from, and your preceptors
really work with you to customize your schedule to support your future
goals.
Current rotations:
- Administration
- Geriatrics/Parkinson’s
- Drug policy
- Adult medicine
- Joint Commission Preparation
- Critical Care
- Epilepsy/Neurology Clinic
- Family practice
- Cardiology
- General medicine
- Psych/Hospice
Year-long project: “The evaluation and potential implementation
of piperacillin-tazobactam extended interval dosing at Aurora St. Luke’s
Medical Center”
Future plans: I am not quite sure at this time. I enjoy
hospital pharmacy and I also love the ambulatory setting interacting
with patients. I hope to use this year to further define my interests.
