Ryan ServaisCurrent resident – Ryan Servais, Pharm.D.

Previous education: Pharm.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Completed PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Aurora.

Short bio: I grew up in Green Bay, moved to Madison for pharmacy school, and am currently living in Oak Creek. Outside of pharmacy, I enjoy playing, watching, and attending sporting events (especially Packers and Brewers). I also like spending time with family and friends and doing anything outdoors, including running, camping, skiing, and traveling.

What factors did you consider most important when choosing a residency? Important factors for me in choosing a PGY-1 program included the variety of rotations offered, size of the residency class, and an opportunity to work in several different hospitals and ambulatory clinics throughout the year. Furthermore, I valued flexibility and how friendly and knowledgeable I perceived the preceptors to be during Midyear and the interview process. For my PGY-2 in critical care, I valued the opportunity to work in several high acuity intensive care units with preceptors I have become familiar with and respect.

Why Aurora? Aurora offers flexibility in changing rotations throughout the year, has a large residency class, and offers experience in a variety of practice settings. In addition, there are a large number of intensive care units throughout the system and many knowledgeable pharmacists and intensivists to learn from. Also, Aurora has strong leadership and is dedicated to retaining residents as employees if desired.

Current rotations:

  • Coronary/Cardiovascular Intensive Care
  • Emergency Department
  • Cardiothoracic Transplant
  • Operations – ICU set-up at a new hospital
  • Medical-Respiratory Intensive Care
  • Neurological/Neurosurgical Intensive Care
  • Surgical Intensive Care
  • Electronic Intensive Care at Aurora's eICU
  • Neonatal Intensive Care
  • Operating Room

Year-long project: Implementing pharmacy services in the emergency department of a tertiary care medical center

Future plans: Following this year, I hope to be competent in the provision of pharmaceutical care in a wide range of intensive care unit settings. I will use this year to enhance my ICU skills and hope to become an ICU pharmacist for a large hospital or hospital system.
