Current resident – Jennifer Tomczak, Pharm.D.
Previous education: B.S. in biological sciences from Northern Illinois University, Pharm.D. from Midwestern University
Short bio: I am originally from Wheaton, Illinois and just relocated to downtown Milwaukee. I am excited to experience a new place and explore the city. In my spare time, I enjoy shopping, working out, and spending time with my friends and family.
What factors did you consider most important when choosing a residency? For me, the most important factor to consider when choosing a residency program was the variety of rotations. I wanted to have the opportunity to work in a variety of clinical settings, from acute to ambulatory care, as well as pharmacy administration. I felt that this would allow me to build a broad knowledge base and provide a well-rounded experience.
Why Aurora? I chose Aurora because it is associated with a health system, which offers rotations at a variety of hospital sites. I knew that the exposure to different environments and healthcare professionals would give me a chance to see the variation in pharmacy practice between institutions. I was also drawn to the people and the strong group dynamic at Aurora. Everyone is very friendly and willing to help one another. The large residency class size is very appealing to me, as well, because I enjoy sharing ideas and working with my peers.
Current rotations:
- Cardiology
- General Medicine
- Operating Room
- Drug Use Policy
- Oncology, inpatient
- Administration
- Critical Care
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
- Adult Medicine
- Family Medicine Clinic
Year-long project: Prostaglandin conversion protocols for patients with pulmonary hypertension.
Future plans: My goal for my career is to practice as a clinical pharmacist in a setting that challenges me consistently and allows me to directly impact the lives of my patients. I am also open to the possibility of pursuing a PGY-2 residency if I develop a strong interest in a certain area of specialty. As an adjunct to my clinical practice, I would eventually like to take on the role of preceptor for pharmacy students and residents.
