Current resident – Jeff Zimmerman, Pharm.D.
Previous education: I received my Pharm.D. from Drake University and completed my PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Aurora Health Care.
Short bio: I grew up in Rockford, IL, went to school in Des Moines, IA and now am living in the Third Ward in Milwaukee, WI (Trying to optimize my Midwest experience). I like riding my bike, swimming, playing frisbee, hanging out with friends and really anything that involves being outside.
Factors considered most important when choosing residency: For my PGY-1, I was looking for a residency that could offer a wide range of experiences to ensure a maximum learning experience. I also wanted to have a large residency class to not only be able to bounce ideas off one another but to build some friendships along the way. Going into a PGY-2 Critical Care Specialty Residency, I wanted to ensure the opportunity to work in an array of ICUs for maximal critical care exposure.
Why Aurora? Aurora had exactly what I was looking for in my PGY-1 residency. As I progressed through the year and was exposed to the many ICUs at St. Luke's Medical Center I realized this would be a great opportunity to build upon my skill set. The patient population that St. Luke's Medical Center is extremely vast and there is great opportunity to learn a lot.
Current rotations:
- Surgical ICU
- Electronic intensive care at the Aurora eICU
- Coronary ICU
- Abdominal Transplant
- Neurological/Neurosurgical ICU
- Cardiothoracic Transplant
- Emergency Department
- Cardiovascular ICU
- Medical-Respiratory ICU
- Neonatal ICU at Aurora Sinai Medical Center
- Medical ICU at Aurora Sinai Medical Center
Year-long project: My year-long project is to update the current sedation and analgesia protocol with an emphasis on daily interruption to assess mechanical ventilation needs.
Future plans: To become a clinical pharmacist in the ICU setting. I currently have exposure working the Surgical and Neurosurgical ICUs which I really enjoy. As I grow professionally I plan on working towards my BCPS and I hope to become a clinical coordinator.
