Residency Program
Goal
The Health System Pharmacy Administration Residency Program is aimed at training the future leaders of integrated health systems. It is offered as either a one-year administration program for residents with prior residency experience or is combined with Aurora’s PGY1-Pharmacy Practice Residency for a two-year program for applicants without prior residency experience. The option of attaining an MBA is available. Candidates who are interested in careers as clinical coordinators, supervisors, managers or directors in an integrated health system are encouraged to apply.
Rotation Sites
Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center
- Wisconsin’s largest private hospital, Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center is internationally known for its expertise in heart care. Located on the south side of Milwaukee, Aurora St. Luke’s also offers exceptional specialty care in areas such as cancer treatment, digestive diseases, abdominal/cardiothoracic transplant and neurology. It is the home of the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic.
Aurora Sinai Medical Center
- A teaching hospital located in downtown Milwaukee, Aurora Sinai Medical Center offers unique pharmaceutical care experiences including neonatal/perinatal care, geriatrics, Parkinson disease, internal medicine and medical intensive care.
Aurora West Allis Medical Center
- A community hospital providing a full range of inpatient and outpatient services, Aurora West Allis Medical Center’s specialty services include cardiology, digestive diseases, cancer treatment, orthopedics, women’s health and obstetrics.
Other opportunities may exist at other Aurora sites as applicable.
Specific Learning Experiences
The format of the residency is tailored to the interest, experience, aptitude and career goals of the resident. The following is a list of potential rotation experiences used to build each resident’s schedule for the year. Some experiences can be accomplished concurrently with others.
- Administration of health system pharmacy: Human resources, financial management, strategic planning,communication skills, accreditation,continuity of care, resource management, and interfaces to medical staff and administration, and corporate interfaces
- Ambulatory care management: Retail pharmacy operations, for-profit Aurora Ventures, personnel management, ambulatory clinical services and ambulatory service delivery models
- Automation and technology: Inpatient and ambulatory computer systems, interfaces, vendor relationships and product development and enhancement
- Drug use policy: Pharmacy & Therapeutic Committee, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacy benefit management and accreditation
- Clinical pharmacy management: Personnel management, program development, staff development and physician relationships
- Financial management: Budgeting, financial planning, business plans, monitoring financial performance, pro forma development and profitability analysis
- Inpatient pharmacy supervision: Personnel management, process analysis, workflow improvement and drug distribution systems
- Orientation: Computer systems, drug distribution, personnel, policies, workflow and department structure
- Professional development: Projects, in-services, visits to other institutions, staffing, professional organizations, current topics discussions, ACPE continuing education presentations and interviewing/recruiting
- Purchasing/inventory control: Procurement, inventory management, contracting, market share rebates, negotiation, philanthropy, contract compliance, distributor relationships and vendor relationships
Candidate Qualifications
- Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy
- Eligible for pharmacist licensure in Wisconsin
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.
- The Pharmacy Residency programs at Aurora Health Care participate in the Residency Matching Program ("The Match"). Employment with Aurora Health Care as a pharmacy resident is contingent upon the applicant satisfying Aurora Health Care's employment eligibility requirements.
Quality Benefits
Each resident is eligible for full-time employee benefits. This includes medical/dental insurance, 23 days paid time off, travel support and tuition support for an MBA program.
Stipend
We update competitive salaries annually. The current stipend for the PGY1 year is $52,000 and $72,800 for the PGY2 year.

Each candidate must submit the following application materials: letter of interest, curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation and pharmacy school transcripts. Letters of recommendation should be sent by the reference directly to the program rather than by the applicant. Pharmacy school transcripts should be sent by the school directly to the program rather than by the applicant. No separate application form is required. All application materials must be received by January 10. Letter of interest must specify which program you are applying for (PGY1 Pharmacy Practice – Milwaukee, PGY1 Pharmacy Practice – Aurora West Allis Medical Center, PGY1 Pharmacy Practice – Green Bay, PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residency, PGY1 and PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration, PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration, PGY2 Oncology or PGY2 Critical Care). Letter of interest must also specify your career goal, why you are interested in a residency, what you are looking for in a residency, and why you are applying for a residency specifically at Aurora Health Care.
