PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration Residency

Goal

The Health-System Pharmacy Administration Residency Program is aimed at training the future leaders of integrated health systems. It is offered as either a one-year administration program for residents with prior residency experience or as a two-year program, including one year of Aurora’s PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency.  The option of attaining an MBA is available. Candidates who are interested in careers as Clinical Coordinators, Supervisors, Managers or Directors in an integrated health system are encouraged to apply.

Rotation Sites

Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center

Wisconsin's largest private hospital, located on the south side of Milwaukee, internationally known for its expertise in cardiovascular care.  Aurora St. Luke's offers exceptional specialty care in areas such as cancer treatment, digestive diseases and neurology. It is the home of the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic.

Aurora Sinai Medical Center

A teaching hospital located in downtown Milwaukee offers unique pharmaceutical care experiences including neonatal/perinatal care, community-based ambulatory care, geriatrics, internal medicine, as well as medical intensive care.

Aurora West Allis Medical Center

A community hospital providing a full range of inpatient and outpatient services. Among its specialty services are cardiology, digestive diseases, cancer, orthopedics, women's health and obstetrics.

Experience

The format of the residency is tailored to the interest, experience, aptitude and career goals of the resident. The following is a list of potential rotation experiences used to build each resident's schedule for the year. Some experiences can be accomplished concurrently with others.

  • Orientation: Computer Systems, Drug Distribution, Personnel, Policies, Department Organization, Workflow.
  • Drug Use Policy: P&T Committee, Pharmacoeconomics, Pharmacy Benefit Management, Accreditation.
  • Financial Management: Budgeting, Financial Planning, Business Plans, Monitoring Financial Performance, Pro Forma Development, Profitability Analysis
  • Purchasing/Inventory Control: Procurement, Inventory Management, Contracting, Market Share Rebates, Negotiation, Philanthropy, Contract Compliance, Distributor Relationships, Vendor Relationships
  • Clinical Pharmacy Management: Personnel Management, Program Development, Staff Development, Physician Relationships
  • Inpatient Pharmacy Supervision: Personnel Management, Process Analysis, Workflow Improvement, Drug Distribution Systems
  • Ambulatory Care Management: Retail Pharmacy Operations, For-Profit Aurora Ventures, Personnel Management, Ambulatory Clinical Services, Ambulatory Service Delivery Models
  • Automation & Technology: Inpatient and Ambulatory Computer Systems, Interfaces, Vendor Relationships, Product Development and Enhancement
  • Administration of Health System Pharmacy: Human Resources, Financial Management, Strategic Planning, Communication Skills, Accreditation, Continuity of Care, Resource Management and Interfaces to Medical Staff, Administration and Corporate Interfaces
  • Professional Development: Projects, In-services, Visits to other Institutions, Staffing, Professional Organizations, Current Topics Discussions, ACPE Continuing Education Presentations

Candidate qualifications

Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy, and eligible for licensure in Wisconsin.

Quality benefits

Each resident is eligible for full-time employee benefits. This includes medical/dental insurance, 23 days of paid time off, travel support and tuition support for an MBA program.

Stipend

We update competitive salaries annually. The current stipend is $45,760 for the PGY1 year and $65,000 for the PGY2 year.

Letters of interest should include which program the applicant is applying for (i.e. PGY1 Pharmacy Practice-Milwaukee, PGY1 Pharmacy Practice-Green Bay, PGY1 Pharmacy Practice with Emphasis in Community Care, PGY2 Health-System Administration or PGY1 and PGY2 Health System Administration), the applicant's career goal, what they are looking for in a residency, and why they are interested in a residency at Aurora Health Care.
