Carroll University candidates must be able to document completion of mandatory coursework with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA as defined in the prerequisite for Aurora St. Luke's School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The student is responsible for forwarding an updated transcript or final course report for any mandatory coursework that is incomplete at the time the original application is submitted.

Physical characteristics
- Physical stamina and the ability to endure long, continuous periods of duty without incapacitating fatigue and disability.
- Visual acuity to assess image quality and to observe physical changes in the patient's condition, during routine sonographic procedures.
- Speech and hearing to give instructions to and receive communication from patients.
- Manual dexterity to adjust machine controls, attach and adjust supportive devices and assist patients into position for the sonographic procedure.
Mental and emotional characteristics
- Must be able to work under stress and maintain self-control.
- Must have both patience and tact in dealing with others.

Pre-placement screening
Applicants selected for admission are required to undergo pre-placement drug screening and physical assessment as well as a criminal background check.

Shadow experiences
General information
Job shadowing is required for application to the sonography program. It is strongly recommended that the applicant complete a minimum of 4 hours in a Cardiovascular Imaging department and a minimum of 4 hours in a General Imaging department.
Applicants must document shadowing experience. Documentation should include the name of the facility where the shadowing occurred, total number of hours and be signed by the sonographer who provided the shadowing experience.
Shadow candidates must be 18 years of age or older.
Available times
Shadowing experience is conducted weekdays between the hours of 9:00 AM
- 5:00 PM.
Shadowing will not be scheduled on weekends or Holidays.

Day of the shadow experience
Candidates must bring a valid photo ID to the scheduled appointment. Candidates will be interacting with our patients during the shadow experience. Therefore it is important for the candidate to appear clean and neat as well as dress professionally.
The following attire is recommended:
- Dress pants
- Appropriate shirt or top
- Leather shoes that fully enclose the foot
The following attire is not allowed:
- Blue jeans
- Cropped/tank tops
- Shirts or tops with writing, messages, or advertisements
- Open toed shoes or sandals
Application Fee
Candidates applying through Carroll University Department Health Sciences are NOT required to submit the $25 application fee.
Application Materials
Application materials are available from the Health Sciences and 2+2 Program Advisor at Carroll University. The CU Program Advisor collects all student application materials and forwards them to the Sonography Program. Any application submitted by the student will be rejected.
Enrollment Process
Application materials will be made available October through November on an annual basis. The CU Program Advisor informs students of yearly deadlines. Please notify the advisor as early as possible of your intent to apply. No exceptions will be made for students who miss the application deadline.
Applicants are required to complete a program application form and the drug screen consent form.
Applicants must provide a brief autobiography, 1-2 typed pages, covering the past four years of the applicant's life. The narrative must also state why he/she has an interest in the field of sonography and Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
Applications must have three (3) signed letters of professional reference along with the applicant recommendation form. (Original letter signed & dated within 6 months of the application date). Applications with less than three letters of reference will not be considered.
Applicants should submit documentation showing recent job shadowing experience.
The applicant will possess a minimum of 100 hours of current direct patient care experience as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) in either a hospital or nursing home setting. Applicants must have the verification of patient care form completed by their current employer and return the form with their application materials. Failure to submit the required documentation will result in an incomplete application.
Applicant/candidate assessment
All application elements are reviewed and scored. Applicants meeting the required minimum point value may be invited for a personal interview with the Admissions Committee. Please note, not all applicants will receive an interview. The decision of the committee is based upon information provided in the application. Factors considered are:
- Academic achievement
- Patient care experience
- Knowledge of sonography
- Compliance with all application requirements
- Perceived communication skills, motivation, ability to follow instructions and maturity
Scheduling of Interviews
Interview information is forwarded to qualified candidates via the Carroll University email account. Personal interviews will be scheduled in March and April following the enrollment period.
Please note, class size is limited and not all applicants are selected for admission to the program.
Withdrawing Your Application
If at anytime you decide not to pursue a position in our program please notify the Sonography Program Supervisor at Aurora St. Luke's via email at laura.sorenson@aurora.org so we may deactivate your file.
Acceptance
The school does not maintain a waiting list; rather an Admissions Committee selects the most qualified applicants on an annual basis.
Annually, a minimum of four available positions are reserved for qualified CU candidates.
The Admissions Committee will notify all applicants and Carroll University of their final decision in writing.
Candidates offered a position are required to submit a written letter of acceptance.
Program Fees
All enrolled students are responsible for purchasing their own textbooks prior to the start of classes. Students are also responsible for paying fees that are not part of tuition during their second year. Current fees are approximately $300.00 per year.
