Construction of Aurora Medical Center in the Town of Summit reached a major milestone Wednesday with the placement of the final piece of structural steel.

Construction workers and community members joined physicians and other caregivers from Aurora Health Care for a special topping off ceremony at the construction site at Interstate 94 and Highway 67 in the Town of Summit. Also participating was Summit Town Chairman Len Susa.

The completion of the structural steel was marked with the lifting of a beam painted in Aurora's signature teal and signed by many of the construction workers.

"A little more than a year ago we stood on this site to break ground for this important project," said Donald J. Nestor, Aurora's executive vice president and chief operating officer. "Today we have gathered to recognize a significant moment in the construction of a medical center that will usher in a new era of health care excellence in Waukesha County."

Nestor thanked the construction teams.
"You have much to be proud of today," he said. "What you are so skillfully building in brick and mortar and steel is a place where lives will be saved and health will be restored - a place where the highest quality care will be provided."

David Ulery, M.D., a longtime Oconomowoc pediatrician and president of Aurora Wilkinson Medical Clinic, said excitement about the project was building.

"Our caregivers and patients have watched this beautiful new medical center rise to its full height, and the sense of anticipation just continues to grow," Dr. Ulery said.

The new Aurora Medical Center is being built at the southeast corner of I-94 and Highway 67. The 110-bed medical center will offer a full range of hospital services, including advanced treatment options. It also will provide a new home for the physicians and staff of Aurora Wilkinson Medical Clinic.

Construction of the medical center has remained on schedule, even through a particularly difficult winter. The medical center is expected to open early in 2010.

The developer of the project is Hammes Co. Mortenson Construction is the general contractor.

Aurora Health Care is a not-for-profit Wisconsin health care provider and a national leader in efforts to improve the quality of care. Aurora provides care at sites in more than 90 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin.
