Large expansion of Sheboygan Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic

Monday, August 09, 2004

Focus on chemotherapy, clinical research space, patient education area

SHEBOYGAN, Wis., Aurora Sheboygan Clinic officials announced today a significant renovation and expansion of the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic, located adjacent to the Aurora Sheboygan Clinic. Cancer patients can see their doctors and receive advanced diagnostic tests and treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation oncology, all at one location.

Santhosh Kumar, MD, a hematologist/oncologist, who is involved in cancer research along with fellow physician Max Haid, MD, said, ``This expansion will allow us to provide state-of-the art cancer care in a more patient-friendly environment. The increased space will have a positive effect on the brand new, cancer research trials Dr. Haid and I are currently conducting for the first time in Sheboygan County. It will also help our team’s clinical and basic science research efforts as well.``

As part of the project, more stations for patients undergoing chemotherapy will be added, a new entrance for radiation oncology patients will be built along with a separate waiting room. The clinic’s main waiting area will be enlarged.

Clinic Administrator Jerry Kamp, said, ``This project will accommodate the continued increase in patients treated at the clinic and allow more space for those undergoing chemotherapy. Patients often request particular time slots and require specific appointment days as part of their chemotherapy treatment regimen. Adding more chairs for chemotherapy should ease any scheduling conflicts, while creating a more welcoming environment for our patients. The renovation will give the clinic staff more space in which to work more efficiently, too.``

As an added benefit, renovation of the clinic’s lower level will provide dedicated space for cancer researchers, an employee lounge, a conference room and office space for radiation therapy staff members.

``Patients and family members will also have more opportunities to learn about cancer, as the Vince Lombardi Resource Library will be expanded and upgraded,`` Kamp explained, ``We will move the library adjacent to the expanded waiting area. This Resource Library helps patients and families search for important information they need to make informed decisions about cancer prevention, early detection and treatment options. Users will have more convenient access to computer-based, cancer information programs, along with the latest videos, books and other printed information about cancer that can be checked out.``

The Sheboygan site was established in 1994 as the first satellite of the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic in Milwaukee. Known then as the Eastern Wisconsin Regional Cancer Center, it represented a collaboration of five respected cancer care organizations in Sheboygan County. The clinic was renamed and dedicated as a Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic in 1999. The current expansion project should be completed in late fall.

The Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic is located at 1222 N. 23rd Street, Sheboygan, Sheboygan. The clinic is part of Aurora Health Care, a not-for-profit Wisconsin health care provider and a nationally recognized leader in efforts to improve the quality of health care. Aurora offers services in more than 80 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin.
