Aurora VNA to issue weekly flu clinic updates

Monday, October 18, 2004

The Aurora Visiting Nurse Association of Wisconsin (Aurora VNA) will be issuing weekly flu clinic updates in an effort to help the public know where the vaccine is available, who is eligible to receive it and what they can do to prevent the flu if they do not receive a vaccination.

The Aurora VNA clinics are focusing on reaching the greatest number of high-risk individuals in communities throughout eastern Wisconsin. Individuals who come to a clinic will be required to fill out a questionnaire that determines if a person is high-risk.

It is very important for people to know that only high-risk individuals, as defined by federal health guidelines, will be receiving flu shots at this time. High-risk patients may also want to contact their primary-care physician to see if they have vaccine available. Guidelines of high-risk individuals follow this schedule.

Federal health guidelines define a high-risk individual as anyone:

  • 65 years or older
  • Age 2 to 64 years with chronic medical conditions ( e.g. asthma, diabetes)
  • Pregnant women
  • Residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities
  • High-risk children 6 months to 18 years of age who are on chronic aspirin therapy
  • Health-care workers with direct patient care
  • Out-of-home caregivers/household contacts of children under 6 months of age
  • Children from 6months to 23 months. Note: The VNA does not vaccinate children under the age of 9. It is recommended that parents take children to their pediatrician because they may require two doses of the vaccine.
  • High-risk children from age 9 to 17 need to have a parent with them to get a shot.

Information on clinics is available by logging onto www.aurorahealthcare.org and click on the Shoo the Flu logo. People also can call the VNA hotline at 1-800-548-7580.

If someone is not in the high-risk groups, federal health experts recommend they:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water
  • Use tissues for coughs/sneezes and dispose of them immediately
  • Stay home from work/school if they think they are sick
  • Talk to a doctor to see if antiviral medicines could help during an outbreak or early signs of the flu
  • Avoid elderly or frail relatives and friends if they think they have the flu
  • Eat well and get enough rest
