Aurora BayCare to build state's largest fertility clinic

Thursday, January 17, 2002

GREEN BAY, Wis., Aurora Health Care and BayCare Clinic announced today plans to develop the state's largest fertility clinic at Aurora BayCare Medical Center. The fertility clinic is part of a project that also includes expanded cardiovascular services and office space. The addition will encompass nearly 40,000 square feet over two floors above the outpatient rehabilitation area of the hospital. Site work is underway with actual construction set to begin in mid-February. "When this addition is completed later this year, we will be northeastern Wisconsin's leading provider of reproductive health services," said Thomas Koehler, M.D., president of Aurora's North Region. The fertility clinic will offer prospective parents who have had difficulty conceiving the opportunity for egg harvesting and implantation. Currently, patients receive limited infertility services locally and then travel to Milwaukee, Minneapolis or Chicago for the actual harvesting and implantation. The expansion will maintain the facility's original design to match hospital services with corresponding physician offices on each floor. For example, the fertility clinic will be on the fourth floor, which provides women's and children's services. It includes 12 birthing suites, a pediatrics unit and various diagnostic services in the hospital portion and OB/GYN specialist offices in the adjoining office building. The hospital also plans to add advanced OB/GYN specialists such as urogynecologists. The same concept will be applied to the third floor expansion. The hospital's cardiovascular services, including bypass surgery and catheterization labs, are located there along with physicians that specialize in treating patients with heart disease. The expansion will enable those services to grow. The hospital is also considering the addition of an inpatient rehabilitation unit on the third floor. Demand for services in the hospital and the adjacent physician office building has steadily climbed since opening in September. Patient-assisted parking was recently added because of the high volume of patients coming through daily. The Aurora BayCare Medical Center is a 108-bed, full-service tertiary care hospital located at 2845 Greenbrier Road on Green Bay's east side. It opened in September as a joint effort of Aurora Health Care and BayCare Clinic. The two entities are also partnering on the new Aurora BayCare Health Center, which will open this fall adjacent to the BayCare Surgery Center near the Highway 41/West Mason Street exit. Aurora Health Care is a community-owned Wisconsin health care provider and a nationally recognized leader in efforts to improve the quality of health care. Aurora has care sites in 70 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin. BayCare Clinic comprises more than 75 physicians representing 18 medical and surgical specialties. As northeastern Wisconsin's largest independent physician-owned organization, BayCare is dedicated to providing patient choice and high quality care.
