New system in Aurora facilities features latest imaging technologyMonday, January 30, 2006
Aurora Medical Center and Aurora Health Center Manitowoc County have implemented a new imaging system that allows medical staff to view x-rays, ultrasounds, CT and MRI scans from either building at any time.
The new Picture Archive and Communication System (PACS) developed by Emageon stores all diagnostic images digitally, allowing physicians to view them almost immediately after they are taken. The all-digital network also allows for the viewing of images simultaneously on another computer from another location
For example, should a radiologist want to consult a surgeon on a patient's CT scan, the PACS system makes it possible for the two physicians to see the same images simultaneously from different offices in the two different buildings. In an emergency situation, this allows for difficult decisions requiring multiple physician input to be made quickly and efficiently.
Medical staff can also manipulate the images, by flipping, rotating, lightening and/or darkening them, to get the view they need and provide the most accurate diagnosis for patients.
The system will be used for all diagnostics, with the exception of mammography procedures, performed at Aurora Medical Center and the adjacent Aurora Health Center Manitowoc County. Work is underway to give physicians access to the PACS system from their various clinic locations throughout the county as well.
"The PACS system will allow us to deliver patient information more efficiently to physicians," said Darren Estes, manager of imaging services for Aurora facilities in Manitowoc County. "There are no more films to carry around, and having access to this state-of-the-art technology improves patient care."
