Milwaukee Health Services Inc. to open new clinic

Friday, February 24, 2006

MILWAUKEE – (February 24, 2006) – Milwaukee Health Services Incorporated announced today that it is opening a new clinic at 8200 W. Silver Spring Drive, acquiring a facility from Aurora Health Care, which has operated the site since 2000.

As a non-profit community health center serving low-income, underserved populations since 1989, Milwaukee Health Services Inc. (MHSI) has played a vital role in the community as a “safety net,” providing services to individuals regardless of their ability to pay.

MHSI’s purchase of the Aurora facility is expected to close at the end of March. The agreement to purchase will include the building, equipment and furnishings.

“MHSI had been exploring service options in the area where the clinic is located,” said C.C.Henderson, MHSI president and chief executive officer. “This agreement provides us with a solution that is turn-key in terms of an existing facility with equipment that is more cost-effective than new construction or other options.”

As the percentage of people living in poverty in Milwaukee has increased from 18.8% in 2000 to 22.1% in 2003 according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the new clinic means additional options for low-income individuals to access affordable healthcare to improve their quality of life, Henderson said.

“This agreement supports our strategy of working with community health organizations and the Milwaukee County Primary Care Alliance to expand access to primary care in various neighborhoods throughout the city,” said Paul Nannis, Aurora Health Care’s vice president of government and community relations. “These partnerships also help address concerns about inappropriate use of emergency rooms for primary health services.” Aurora and the Sixteenth Street Community Health Center recently announced a similar agreement, where Aurora sold one of its clinics, located on the near south side, to Sixteenth Street as it looks to expand its operations.

MHSI and Aurora have developed a transition plan for the Silver Spring location that includes staffing and other operational elements to help minimize any interruptions in care for patients.

MHSI will introduce expanded services over time at the clinic, including mammography, pharmacy, women’s health, behavioral health, midwifery, pediatrics, radiology, nutrition counseling and dental. The clinic will accept patients covered under Milwaukee County’s GAMP program.

Aurora has provided financial support for MHSI for special projects in past years and a senior executive of Aurora Sinai Medical Center is a member of the MHSI board of directors.

Milwaukee Health Services, Inc. currently operates from two sites: The Isaac Coggs Health Connection at 2770 North 5th Street and the Martin Luther King Jr. Heritage Health Center at 2555 N. MLK Drive.

Aurora Health Care is a not-for-profit Wisconsin health care provider and a nationally recognized leader in efforts to improve the quality of health care. Aurora offers services at sites in more than 90 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin.
