Diabetes patients go online to share glucose & insulin levels with their doctor

Thursday, July 27, 2006

Aurora Health Care patients can now track their glucose levels and insulin online, and share that information with their doctor easily and securely via the web.

The diabetes tracker allows patients to record their glucose level and the amounts and kinds of insulin given, up to eight times a day. Any notes or comments associated with each entry are also recorded. The tracker retains two week's worth of data, and can be sent to the patient's doctor via secure messaging with little more than a click of a button.

The new tool is part of Aurora's patient portal called My Aurora. The system allows secure messaging between patient and doctor, appointment and prescription renewal requests, email reminders, a full personal health record and customized health content. My Aurora also includes online trackers for weight, food intake, activity levels, blood pressure and daily fluid intake. Users who take advantage of the food intake and activity level tools can get a net calorie balance to see if they are likely to lose, gain or maintain their weight.

"Many of our patients do their banking and taxes online, maintain all their family photos via the web, and were already communicating with their doctors online," said Neal Linkon, manager of web communications for Aurora Health Care. "It just made sense to give patients the option of using the web to track and report their glucose and insulin levels."

The new tool was requested by clinic staff and patients alike, who were tired of having to relay nearly 20 values a day via the telephone.

My Aurora has more than 35,000 registrants, and gets nearly 2,000 new registrations a month. To learn more about My Aurora, click here.
