Aurora Health Care names Bruce Van Cleave chief medical officer and senior vice presidentThursday, January 11, 2007
Aurora Health Care today announced the appointment of Bruce Van Cleave, M.D., as chief medical officer and senior vice president for strategic management.
“Bruce Van Cleave has an outstanding record of achievement when it comes to improving the quality and efficiency of health care,” said Nick Turkal, M.D., president and chief executive officer of Aurora Health Care. “Bruce’s leadership will play a critical role as we strive to enhance the benefits we bring to our patients and our communities.”
Sue Ela, senior clinical vice president and Metro Region president for Aurora, said: “Throughout our organization we are seeking the rapid adoption of best practices in care delivery, and in this effort Dr. Van Cleave’s experience and vision will be enormously helpful.”
Dr. Van Cleave will begin his new position on Feb. 26.
“Aurora has earned a national reputation as a leading innovator in the pursuit of better patient care,” Dr. Van Cleave said. “I look forward to contributing to Aurora’s work to change health care in ways that have real value to patients.”
Since 2003, Dr. Van Cleave has been president and chief executive officer of Carondelet Health in Kansas City, Mo., part of the Ascension Health system. At Carondelet he instituted a quality management program for the organization’s two hospitals, receiving recognition for top-decile quality performance from the federal government’s Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Prior to Carondelet, Dr. Van Cleave was executive vice president of clinical and physician services for Trinity Health in Novi, Mi. Trinity Health is an integrated system with 10,000 physicians and 47 hospitals in seven states.
He also previously held senior clinical leadership positions in the Milwaukee area at Wheaton Franciscan Services and the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is a native of Madison.
Dr. Van Cleave is a family physician and a member of the American College of Physician Executives. He earned his master of science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1973 and his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1977.
