Aurora Visiting Nurse Association seeks volunteers for hospice program

Thursday, April 05, 2007

Are you looking for a unique way to give back to the community? Consider volunteering a portion of your time to the Aurora Visiting Nurse Association of Wisconsin.

The Aurora Visiting Nurse Association of Wisconsin values the contributions of our volunteers. Our hospice program is seeking caring and dependable volunteers. Volunteers are needed in Walworth, Kenosha and Racine counties to assist our hospice patients and their families.

Activities that a volunteer might perform include providing a respite time to caregivers, chatting with patients, or helping out at the office and during special events. Medical training is not a requirement, just a desire to share your time and talents. Volunteer times are flexible according to your interests and availability.

Mary Stenzel, volunteer coordinator, Aurora Visiting Nurse Association of Wisconsin, said volunteering has many benefits including fellowship, a sense of belonging, laughter and an opportunity to give something back to the community.

"We also have a special program available for ‘professional volunteers,''' said Stenzel. "People who would be willing to share special skills such as massage therapists, beauticians, social workers, attorneys, and music and pet therapists would be a welcome addition to our program,'' she said.

The next orientation and training sessions are scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays, April 21 and April 28, at the Aurora Visiting Nurse Association of Wisconsin office in Lake Geneva, 500 Interchange North. For more information or to register, please call Stenzel 262-249-5860 or 800-644-5860, or e-mail mary.stenzel@aurora.org.

To work with patients and families, you must be at least 18 years of age, have your own transportation and be willing to complete the 2-day training program or individual training.
