Aurora Health Care presents free program on obesityTuesday, April 10, 2007
Weight management will be focus
We hear a lot in the news about the obesity epidemic in the U.S. As health consumers, it is difficult to determine what is fact and fiction when it comes to obesity.
Make plans to join Mark Christman, cardiac nurse practitioner, Aurora Burlington Clinic, as he discusses the causes of obesity, how obesity is measured, and various obesity related diseases and conditions.
"Once the patient's goal weight is reached, a weight maintenance plan in combination with behavior therapy will help people avoid regaining the weight,'' said Christman. "With a health care provider managing the patient's weight, they can be assured that it will be a safe plan, unlike some of the fad diets that are out there.''
The program, which is free, will be offered from 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., Mon., April 23, Aurora Wellness Center, 300 McCanna Pkwy., Burlington. Free body fat analysis screenings will also be offered. To register for the program, please call 800-499-5736 or register online at www.Aurora.org/ObesityEpidemic.
"There are many common myths associated with obesity,'' said Christman. "Our goal is to help clarify the information and provide people with the tools they need to be proactive about this.''
The American Obesity Association reports that approximately 127 million adults in the U.S. are overweight, 60 million obese, and 9 million severely obese. The association also reports that obesity increases the risk of illness from about 30 serious medical conditions, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer.
"Today, we know so much more about the links between obesity and the development of disease and illness than we did in previous years,'' said Christman. "For example, obesity is a major risk factor for heart attack. As health care providers, our responsibility is to share this information with the community and help people understand what it means.''
Aurora Health Care is a not-for-profit Wisconsin health care provider and a nationally recognized leader in efforts to improve the quality of health care. Aurora offers services at sites in more than 90 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin.
