Two Aurora Health Care hospitals named among nation's top 100 hospitals

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

Aurora Health Care's West Allis Memorial Hospital and Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center have been named among the nation's 100 top hospitals.

Thomson Healthcare, a leading health care consultant, each year analyzes publicly available data on hospital performance to develop the 100 Top Hospitals list. This is the 15th edition of the Thomson 100 Top Hospitals study.

The list recognizes hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, financial performance and efficiency. This marks the first time West Allis Memorial and Aurora Sheboygan Memorial have been named to the list.

"It is great to be recognized for the work that we have done in the areas of patient safety, quality and cost management," said Rick Kellar, administrator of West Allis Memorial Hospital. "It is very rewarding for our staff and medical staff to be honored nationally. This reflects the work that we are doing not only in our hospital but also throughout Aurora Health Care."

Bobbe Tiegen, administrator at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, said: "At Aurora, our No. 1 priority is to provide the highest quality care for our patients. Our physicians and staff continually seek ways to improve our services and deliver patient-centered care, and we are pleased to have their efforts recognized in this way."

If all hospitals in the country had performed at the level of the Top 100 hospitals on the eight patient safety measures studied, 7,914 lives would have been saved and costs would have been reduced by $253 million during the two-year period covered by the study, Thomson reported.

West Allis Memorial Hospital and Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center are part of Aurora Health Care, a not-for-profit Wisconsin health care provider and a national leader in efforts to improve the quality of health care. Aurora offers care at sites in more than 90 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin.
