Aurora QuickCare Offering Meningitis Vaccinations

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

August, which is National Immunization Awareness Month, is a good time to visit an Aurora QuickCareSM to have children immunized against meningitis.

The Centers for Disease Control officials recommend immunization for adolescents 11 years and older, college freshmen living in dormitories, and adults up to age 55.

“This is a great time to offer meningitis immunizations. Students can get it taken care of before the hustle and bustle of the school year begins, although we do offer the vaccinations all year,” said Janet Teske, nurse practitioner and Aurora QuickCare manager.

Teske stressed that it’s important for younger students to be vaccinated as well. “Meningitis is spread by close contact – that includes sharing sports bottles, lip gloss, all the things that children do on a daily basis. It is estimated that 5% to 7% of the population carry the meningitis bacteria.”

Meningitis shots are $128 when paid for at time of service; patients also can check to see if their insurance is accepted.

QuickCare sites are staffed by health care providers who offer a wide range of services, including diagnosing illness and prescribing medications. As a part of Aurora Health Care, they are supported by Aurora’s extensive network of physicians and facilities.

Aurora QuickCare offers tests to quickly diagnose common minor ailments, and most services range from $49-$69. Many insurance plans are accepted with card presented at the visit.
