Festival of Lights Holiday Celebration - Chanukah Celebration at Aurora Sinai Medical Center

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

Milwaukee, Wis. -- Patients, staff and visitors of Aurora Sinai Medical Center will celebrate the Jewish Holy Days of Chanukah on Dec. 17th, from 11 a.m. to noon in the 1st floor auditorium of the main hospital building.

Chanukah is an eight-day celebration of the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem by the Maccabees after their victory over the Syrians. According to tradition, a single cruse of oil, which normally fueled the Eternal Light for one day, lasted for eight days.

In recognition of this historic event, a common Jewish practice is to light the eight candles of a Menorah over the course of the eight nights of Chanukah. To continue that tradition, Aurora Sinai's celebration will include the lighting of the Menorah, a choir performance from the Milwaukee Jewish Day School and Kosher refreshments.

Rabbi Len Lewy, director of the Jewish Chaplaincy Program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation in cooperation with Jewish Family Services, will lead Wednesday's event.

This year's program will honor the work and dedication of Shirley and Stanley Kritzik. Stanley is a past chairman of the Aurora Health Care board of directors. Shirley was an active leader of the philanthropic efforts to build the Easy Street program at Aurora Sinai Medical Center.

Aurora Health Care is a not-for-profit Wisconsin health care provider and a national leader in efforts to improve the quality of care. Aurora provides care at sites in more than 90 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin.
