Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington Receives Outstanding Designation for Cancer Program

Friday, March 20, 2009

Burlington, Wis. -- Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington joins an elite number of cancer programs in the nation recognized for providing excellent cancer care.

The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons recently presented the hospital with an outstanding achievement award for its cancer program.

Only about 25% of all hospitals in the country have approved cancer programs, with fewer receiving commendation. Fewer still receive an outstanding achievement designation. The outstanding designation means that patients are receiving some of the highest quality cancer care in the nation.

Kathleen Skowlund, vice president and chief administrative officer, Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington, said the outstanding designation reflects clinical excellence that only a few cancer programs achieve nationally.

"This is significant for everyone involved, including the patients we care for,'' she said. "The patients are at the center of everything we do and this accomplishment recognizes our extensive efforts in providing the very best cancer services in our community.''

The Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care.

To achieve American College of Surgeon approval, a hospital must comply with 36 standards and undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of its performance. Patients who select an "approved" hospital receive comprehensive care involving state-of-the-art services and equipment; a multi-specialty team approach to coordinate best treatment options; access to cancer-related information, education, and support; a cancer registry that collects data and offers life-long support, and quality care close to home.
