Aurora Health Center offers free prostate screening

Friday, September 04, 2009

LAKE GENEVA, Wis.,— Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among men. According to estimates from the American Cancer Society, almost 219,000 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in the United States during 2007. Studies show that one man in six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, but only one in 34 will die of it.

The main risk factors for prostate cancer are not preventable (age, race, family history), which is why early detection through screening is the best opportunity to ensure a positive outcome.

Steven Bernstein, M.D., Aurora Health Care, board certified urologist, will offer a free prostate screening from 8 a.m.-11 a.m., Saturday, October 3, 2009, Aurora Health Center in Lake Geneva, 146 E. Geneva Square. The screenings are free to the public, however registration is required. To register, please call (262) 767-8275 or go online at www.Aurora.org, then find the "My Aurora" box in the upper right corner. If you have never used My Aurora, you will need to register to set up a user name and password.

Men between the ages of 45-75 are encouraged to participate because cancer risks increase with age. More than 65 percent of cases are diagnosed within this age group.

There are many options for treating prostate cancer, including surgery. Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington now offers robotic minimally invasive surgery for prostatectomy. The state-of-the-art da Vinci® Surgical System is the latest technology that provides patients with multiple benefits. The results have been excellent.

Aurora Health Care is a not-for-profit Wisconsin health care provider and a nationally recognized leader in efforts to improve the quality of health care. Aurora offers services at sites in 90 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin.
