Aurora Health Center in Ripon hosts monthly diabetes support group

Monday, May 10, 2010

Ripon, Wis. – Aurora Health Center in Ripon will hold a monthly diabetes support group meeting on Thursday, May 27. Participants can join the 2 p.m. or 7 p.m. session at the clinic, 1242 W. Fond du Lac Street in Ripon.

This month’s topic is “Don’t Lose Sight of Diabetic Eye Disease.” Optometrist, Amy Treichel, of Aurora Health Center in Oshkosh will discuss diabetic eye disease, commonly known as diabetic retinopathy. Participants will learn that:

  • almost half of people with diabetes have diabetic eye disease
  • diabetic eye disease is both preventable and treatable
  • an optometrist can serve as the first line of detection, and
  • if you are one of the 54 million Americans living with diabetes, you should be seeing your eye doctor annually for a dilated eye exam.

Aurora Health Care’s Certified Diabetes Educator Colleen Micele, NP, will host each support group meeting. Colleen has been serving the Ripon and surrounding communities for 12 years.

All support groups will take place on the fourth Thursday of each month and will meet from March through May and will resume in September. Participants are welcome to attend either the 2 to 3 p.m. session or the 7 to 8 p.m. session.
