Area students learn about medical careers at Health Careers Camp

Thursday, August 05, 2010

Manitowoc, Wis. - Area high school students were recently given a glimpse of career opportunities in the health care industry at a Health Careers Summer Camp held at Aurora Medical Center in Manitowoc County.

The week-long camp allowed 20 local students to tour health care facilities in northeastern Wisconsin and to hear from health care professionals. Aurora Medical Center in Manitowoc County partnered with Lakeshore Health Care Alliance and the Northeastern Wisconsin Area Health Education Center to stage the camp.

"Students get to learn firsthand what it's like to be a health care professional by participating in this opportunity," said Jill Niemczyk, program manager of Northeastern Wisconsin Area Health Education Center. "Students get an image from television on what health care is, but this experience shows them health care is better; it is much more real, and we are more connected to the patients."

As part of the camp, students were able to interact with experienced critical care nurses as they demonstrated Aurora's innovative eICU technology that allows physicians and nurses in the Milwaukee area to review the status of patients in Manitowoc and throughout the Aurora system.

Students were also able to hear of the challenges and opportunities within the Speech Language Pathology profession in addition to learning about Aurora's patient-centered approach, focusing on how physical, spiritual and emotional care is delivered by caregivers.

Additionally, the Eagle III helicopter made a visit to the Aurora Medical Center in Manitowoc County, and students were able to tour the helicopter while learning about in-flight health professions such as paramedics, nurses and pilots.

Job-shadowing opportunities at the Aurora Medical Center in Manitowoc County were also provided to students on July 15.
