Aurora Health Care receives international accreditation for hyperbaric programs

Monday, September 13, 2010

Aurora operates the only accredited hyperbaric programs in Wisconsin

Milwaukee, Wis. -- Aurora Health Care has achieved Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) accreditation for its hyperbaric programs at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, Aurora West Allis Medical Center, and Aurora Medical Center in Oshkosh. Aurora Medical Center in Washington County also received the highest honor of accreditation with distinction. Aurora’s hyperbaric programs are the only accredited hyperbaric programs in Wisconsin.

“We are dedicated to providing the community with access to the best treatment centers and health care professionals,” says Laurie Gesell, MD, medical director of Aurora Medical Group’s hyperbaric medicine and woundcare division. “Accreditation for our newer programs and repeated re-accreditation are the next steps in bringing recognition to hyperbaric programs that already strive for continuous quality improvement and performance excellence.”

The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) is an international organization that supports the accreditation program that has recently been recognized by the Joint Commission as a Complementary Accrediting Agency for this specialty area.

The accreditation recognizes hyperbaric clinical facilities nationwide that maintain high patient care standards, are staffed with well-trained specialists in addition to using quality equipment that is properly installed, maintained, and operated at the highest possible safety level.

The survey team evaluated Aurora’s four programs over a five-day period, speaking to the medical directors, managers and supervisors, nurses, hyperbaric technologists, hospital administrators, and various other caregivers that provide support for the hyperbaric programs. Current patients were also surveyed.

The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) is an international, non-profit organization serving over 2,400 members from more than 50 countries. The UHMS is the primary source of scientific information for diving and hyperbaric medicine physiology worldwide.

Aurora Health Care is a not-for-profit health care provider and a nationally recognized leader in efforts to improve health care quality. Aurora offers services at sites in more than 90 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
