American College of Cardiology Foundation presents Gold Performance Achievement Award

Milwaukee, Wi. – Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center has received the American College of Cardiology Foundation’s NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG (Get With The Guidelines) Gold Performance Achievement Award for 2010 – one of only 135 hospitals nationwide to do so.

The award recognizes Aurora St. Luke’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients. It also signifies that Aurora St. Luke’s has reached an aggressive goal of treating coronary artery disease patients with 85 percent compliance to core standard levels of care outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

The number of acute heart attack patients is expected to grow over the next decade due to the increasing incidence of heart disease and a large aging population. The guidelines are considered a critical step toward saving lives and improving heath attack patient outcomes. To receive this award, Aurora St. Luke’s consistently followed the treatment guidelines in ACTION Registry–GWTG for 24 consecutive months. These include aggressive use of medications like cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, and anticoagulants in the hospital.

ACTION Registry–GWTG empowers health care provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines; and establishes a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety, and
outcomes of care provided for patients with coronary artery disease, specifically highrisk STEMI and NSTEMI patients.

Aurora Health Care is a not-for-profit health care provider and a nationally recognized leader in efforts to improve health care quality. Aurora offers services at sites in more than 90 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
