Researchers honored, led by Dr. Robert Limoni’s Innovation Award from Aurora BayCare Medical Center

Green Bay, Wis. – Dr. Robert Limoni, an orthopedic surgeon at Aurora BayCare Medical Center, received the Innovation Award for his clinical research work as a principal investigator with the Aurora BayCare Clinical Research Department. Dr. Limoni was honored at the Aurora BayCare Medical Center Fall Research Reception event on Sept. 30th.

The event showcased clinical research projects along with principal and clinical researchers involved within Aurora BayCare’s Clinical Research Department, which has grown considerably since its start in 2008 and is part of Aurora’s system-wide Clinical Research Department.

“We value and appreciate our dedicated health care professionals who have invested time and talent into our growing clinical research department,” said Annette Paul, clinical research supervisor at Aurora BayCare Medical Center. “Clinical Research is vital to advancements in the field of health care and Aurora BayCare is committed to expanding our clinical research department and facilitating additional trials in the years to come.

About 20 clinical research studies take place on an annual basis at Aurora BayCare in areas including neuroscience, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, oncology, cardiology, and pulmonology.

Originally, Aurora BayCare’s clinical trials were focused in the area of oncology. However, in 2009 physicians expressed interest in conducting more neuroscience, cardiovascular and pulmonary trials, which has led to include the study areas listed above.

Clinical trials take place for medical devices and drugs trials undergo thorough examinations by both the government and Aurora’s internal review board, known as the Institutional Review Board (IRB.)

Device trials test implantable devices that aim to improve the function of the body. Drug trials compare new treatments to the standard of care and determine how they affect the human body in the development of new pharmaceutical products.

Critical to Research Department’s success is the importance of principal investigators. As long as a principal investigator, such as a medical doctor, oversees a clinical trial, Aurora BayCare may become a site for a study. Principal investigators can tackle projects exploring new medical devices, a new drug, or any investigator-initiated study that they are interested in.
