Green Bay, Wis. — Aurora BayCare Medical Center has been named among the 50 Top Hospitals for cardiovascular care by Thomson Reuters. The Green Bay tertiary hospital is the only hospital in Wisconsin to earn this recognition.

“Residents in this area should be assured that a local hospital made this national ranking for two years in a row,” said Aurora BayCare Cardiologist Francis Wolf, M.D. “Not only are we delivering top-quality care, close to home, we are getting better each year, as the competition gets fiercer.”

This is the first time Thomson Reuters singled out 50 hospitals rather than the traditional practice of naming 100 winners.

Award winners had higher survival rates, kept more patients complication-free and achieved these results at a lower cost than other hospitals.

“This achievement acknowledges the talented, dedicated caregivers who make sure patients get not only the best evidence-based medicine, but medicine that is delivered with a personal touch,” says Daniel Meyer, Aurora BayCare’s chief administrative officer.

The study— 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals - examined the performance of 1,022 hospitals by analyzing outcomes for patients with heart failure and heart attacks and for those who received coronary bypass surgery and percutaneous cardiovascular interventions (PCI) such as angioplasties.

“In this day and age, when we are given report cards for taking care of critically ill heart patients, this recognition, from an independent organization such at Thomson Reuters, makes the already rewarding work even more gratifying,” said Alex Roitstein, M.D., cardiothoracic surgeon at Aurora BayCare.

The study, in its 12th year, found that the 50 Top Hospitals for cardiovascular care have:
• 33 percent fewer deaths than non-winning hospitals for bypass surgery.
• 21 percent fewer heart failure complications.
• Fewer patients readmitted to the hospitals in the 30 days following discharge.
• Shorter hospital visits. Top hospitals discharge heart patients a half day sooner.
• Lower costs. Top hospitals spend $1,300 less per case than non-winners.
