Aurora St. Lukes Medical Center performs 700th heart transplantWednesday, January 12, 2011
Milwaukee, Wi. – Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center has successfully completed the 700th heart transplant since the program began in 1984. Achieving this milestone further establishes Aurora St. Luke’s transplant program amongst the top in the nation.
“The number 700 represents many individuals who received a chance at a longer life and 700 families who lost a loved one, but gave a stranger a chance at life,” says Dr. Frank Downey, surgical director of cardiac transplantation at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center.
“Every transplant patient represents a story filled with heroes. The donor who provided them with their new heart, the team of caregivers who worked so hard to give them this opportunity, and the loved ones who helped them through countless medical appointments; each of them are heroes.”
The cardiac transplant program at Aurora St. Luke’s is the largest in Wisconsin and one of the largest in the nation. Other hospitals have performed a similar number of heart transplants including the University of Minnesota Medical Center, the University of Michigan Medical Center and Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans.
Aurora Health Care is a not-for-profit Wisconsin based health care provider and a national leader in efforts to improve the quality of care. Aurora provides care at sites in more than 90 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
