Garcia-Thomas named Aurora Health Care Foundation president

Monday, July 18, 2011

Milwaukee – Aurora Health Care has appointed Cristy Garcia-Thomas president of the Aurora Health Care Foundation. She begins her new role in September.

Garcia-Thomas joined the United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) as president in 2007. UPAF is the nation’s largest fund for the performing arts and has provided more than $224 million in operating support during the last 44 years.

Her role at UPAF included oversight of all operational aspects of the organization, strategic planning, revenue growth, fundraising, marketing, community relationships, profit and loss and general management functions.

“We in health care are facing a time of many complex financial challenges and opportunities,” said Sue Ela, RN, Aurora’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. “Cristy’s strong relationships with donors, community leaders and foundations in southeastern Wisconsin, her experience in communication and her knowledge of and commitment to Aurora's mission, will put the foundation in a position to seize the opportunities ahead. We are pleased to welcome her to the leadership team.”

Prior to her position with UPAF, Garcia-Thomas served in positions of increasing management responsibility at Journal Sentinel, Inc. She is active in the community and serves on the United Way of Greater Milwaukee board of directors and is the immediate past president of Tempo Milwaukee’s board of directors.

Garcia-Thomas was elected to Aurora’s board of directors in 2000. She will step down to focus on her new role in the foundation.

Garcia-Thomas holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communications from Kansas State University. She and her husband, Mark Thomas, make their home in Mequon.

Aurora Health Care is a not-for-profit Wisconsin health care provider and a national leader in efforts to improve health care quality. Aurora offers services at sites in more than 90 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
