Aurora Health Care honors Sheboygan Deputy Sheriff with a special award for saving a lifeWednesday, August 10, 2011Formal recognition to take place August 16th Sheboygan, Wis. – Aurora Health Care will formally recognize Sheboygan Deputy Sheriff Anthony Blogdett with a special award for using an automated external defibrillator (AED) to save a patient’s life. Aurora Health Care staff and caregivers will present Deputy Blogdett with his award on Tuesday, Aug. 16th during the Sheboygan County Board meeting at the Sheboygan County Administrative Building, 508 New York Avenue in Sheboygan. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. In April, Deputy Blogdett responded to assist a 911 call. Upon arrival at the scene, Blogdett found the patient in cardiac arrest and immediately reacted by successfully deploying his department-issued AED, and defibrillated the victim twice. The patient was later cared for at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, and upon stabilization, was flown to Aurora Medical Center in Grafton for definitive cardiac care. The patient has recovered well since the incident. An AED is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart in effort to stop an irregular heart rhythm and allow a normal rhythm to resume in sudden cardiac arrest. According to the American Heart Association, a heart must be “defibrillated” quickly, as a victim’s chance of surviving drops by 7 to 10 percent for every minute a normal heartbeat isn’t restored.
