Aurora BayCare Open Streets Green Bay event set for August 11Thursday, July 25, 2013
Green Bay, Wis. – “Aurora BayCare Open Streets Green Bay” will give community members and families the opportunity to bike on select streets in Green Bay that are not normally open to bicycles.
On Sunday, August 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., a designated route from Fisk Park on Dousman Avenue over the Main Street Bridge to Whitney Park will be closed to motorized vehicles and open for anyone on foot, rollerblades or a bicycle.
The idea of an open streets event, or Ciclovia, derived from Bogota, Columbia, where they shut down certain streets to automobile traffic and open them up for cyclists, runners/walkers and skaters.
“We want to emphasize that this is not a race,” said Randy Bailey, owner of Stadium Bike. There is no registration and nobody will be timed. “The idea is to allow participants to come and go from the designated route as they please. This way they can enjoy a typically unknown route for non-automobile traffic, as well as participate in additional activities that will take place along the route,” added Bailey.
Additional activities will include fitness activities, food/drink vendors, bike repair stations and other family-friendly events are being planned.
“It’s great to see other events like this from across the nation come to Green Bay,” said Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt. “It’s important that we stay focused on health and wellness in our community. I would like to encourage everyone to get on your bike, walk or run, and participate in this free, family-friendly event.”
Aurora BayCare Medical Center is the presenting sponsor of the Aurora BayCare Open Streets Green Bay. “We are happy and proud to participate in initiatives that will help improve the health of our community,” said Dan Meyer, president of Aurora BayCare. Additional supporting sponsors include Trek and Nicolet Bank.
Other notable open streets events in the United States include Ride the Drive (Madison, WI), Bike the Drive (Chicago, IL), Summer Streets NYC, (New York, NY) and Open Streets Minneapolis (Minneapolis, MN).
