Aurora Names Colman Chief Operating Officer, Lappin Chief Administrative Officer

Milwaukee, Wis. – Aurora Health Care has named Gerard Colman chief operating officer and Mike Lappin chief administrative officer.

Gerard ColmanAs chief operating officer, Colman will be responsible for all clinical operations within Aurora. Colman comes to Aurora from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a three-campus, 19,000-employee cancer care and research institute in Houston. There he served in a number of positions of increasing responsibility over the past nine years, most recently as senior vice president and chief of clinical operations.

Colman, who holds a doctorate in health care management from the University of Texas School of Public Health, also served in senior clinical and financial management positions for Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey, as well as for other hospitals throughout the country. Colman joined Aurora on February 3. He succeeds Steve Bablitch who served as chief operating officer on an interim basis, planning and implementing a comprehensive new organizational structure for the system’s operations. Bablitch’s new role will be Chief of Strategic Business Affairs, focusing on payor relations and redesign, expansion of the Aurora Accountable Care Network and growth strategies. “At my direction, Steve completed an important assignment for the system, readying our organization to meet the challenges posed by the dramatic changes happening in health care by ensuring we have the right structure and people in place to have success,” said Nick Turkal, MD, Aurora’s chief executive officer.

“Gerard brings broad experience in leading operations for major health care institutions that will ensure we continue our journey forward in clinical transformation, medical group integration and population health management,” Turkal said.

Mike LappinMike Lappin will assume the position of chief administrative officer. In addition to his responsibilities as corporate secretary, chief officer for legal, compliance, government relations, internal audit, affiliation strategy and facilities management, Lappin will now also lead information services and human resources.

“In addition to his current role, Mike now leads several important new business functions, including our efforts to forge partnerships and affiliations with other health care systems,” Turkal said. “This expanded role underscores his value to our organization.”

Lappin has been part of Aurora’s leadership team for the past four years and holds his law degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
