New state-of-the-art medical center to serve western Waukesha CountyWednesday, April 21, 2004
Project described as a catalyst for other development in Pabst Farms
SUMMIT, Wis., Officials from Pabst Farms and the physicians and staff of Wilkinson Medical Clinic and Aurora Health Care today announced plans for construction of a full-service medical center to serve the rapidly growing communities of western Waukesha County.
“This is a day we have long looked forward to,” said David Ulery, M.D., a pediatrician and president of Wilkinson Medical Clinic. “The Wilkinson physicians have provided care for people in this area for more than a century. This beautiful new medical center will allow us to build on that proud tradition of care and service.”
The hospital, to be called Aurora Medical Center, will feature a new model of patient care, an approach that seeks to humanize and demystify the hospital experience. The goal will be health care that is designed, in every way, around the patient and the family.
Aurora Medical Center also will be the most technologically advanced community hospital in Wisconsin, incorporating the latest equipment for diagnosis and treatment, all-digital diagnostics, a comprehensive electronic medical record system, and an array of other technology that will enhance care and improve efficiency.
“This new medical center will mean that patients and employers in the communities of western Waukesha County will have new options for high-quality, cost-effective health care services close to home,” Dr. Ulery said. “When it comes to decisions about your health or the health of a loved one, it is important to have options.”
Announcement of the medical center marks a milestone for the developers of Pabst Farms.
“The new Aurora Medical Center will be one of the cornerstones of Pabst Farms and a catalyst for other first-class projects,” said Peter Bell, developer of Pabst Farms. “We recognized from the beginning that health care would need to be a critical component of this grand master planned community.”
The medical center will be built at the southeast corner of Interstate 94 and Highway 67. The hospital campus will be part of a 184-acre triangle of land in the Town of Summit that the Pabst Farms developers have designated for health-care related projects. In addition to the hospital, other possibilities include assisted living, medical/professional buildings and rehabilitation centers.
The new hospital will offer 88 patient rooms, all private and each with a full bathroom. There will be 48 beds for medical-surgical patients; 12 intensive care beds; 12 beds for labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum; 8 beds for pediatric patients; and 8 beds for rehabilitation. The patient rooms will feature home-like furnishings, cable TV and DVD players, individual temperature controls, warm colors, natural wood trim and other amenities to ensure that a hospital stay will be as comfortable as possible.
Aurora Medical Center also will offer soft, indirect lighting, plenty of windows for natural light, kitchenettes for use by patients and their family members, a family lounge and resource library on each floor, nurse stations designed to encourage interaction between patients and caregivers, and an easy-to-navigate floor plan that promotes privacy by separating patient hallways from those used by the public.
“This new medical center will expand access to care, including the latest diagnostic and treatment options, meaning that people in our communities won’t need to travel to obtain the most advanced inpatient and outpatient care,” said Kristin Simons, M.D., a family practice physician with Wilkinson Medical Clinic.
Dr. Simons also noted that the new hospital will bring an additional emergency department to western Waukesha County. “That’s welcome peace of mind for families in our area,” she said. “Our communities will be well prepared for whatever kind of emergency might happen.”
The new emergency department will be staffed entirely by physicians who are board-certified in emergency medicine.
Other hospital services will include:
The medical center also will have a cafeteria, gift shop, chapel, community education room, pharmacy and vision center.
Outside, the medical center campus will feature extensive landscaping that will include a “healing garden,” providing a tranquil retreat for patients, family members, staff and others. The healing garden will incorporate the three essential elements of a Japanese garden: water, for its soothing and reflective qualities; rock, for its sense of permanence; and plants, for their textures and shades of green.
A new and expanded Wilkinson Medical Clinic will be an integral part of the medical center’s campus, offering offices for primary care physicians and specialists. The new clinic space will replace the existing Wilkinson building at 915 Summit Avenue in Oconomowoc.
“We long ago outgrew our current space,” Dr. Ulery said. While the medical center is under construction, new uses of the old clinic building will be explored, he said, adding that it is possible some medical services will continue to be offered there after the hospital opens.
Wilkinson Medical Clinic also has offices in Hartland and Delafield. Those clinics will remain open. Construction is underway on a new Wilkinson location in Dousman.
A total of 60 primary care and specialty physicians and practitioners practice at Wilkinson Medical Clinic, supported by a staff of nearly 400. The clinic’s patients number more than 40,000. More than 3,200 Aurora employees live or work in Waukesha County.
About 400 additional employees will be hired to staff the new Aurora Medical Center. Anyone interested in exploring employment opportunities at the new hospital will find information at www.Aurora.org/WesternWaukesha.
Assuming approval by the Town of Summit, Aurora will start construction in the fall of 2004, with an opening in the spring of 2006.
“With the growth of our communities and the aging of the population, western Waukesha County needs another option in hospital care,” Dr. Ulery said. “The people of Wilkinson Medical Clinic and Aurora are proud to be part of these communities and proud to be able to make this kind of investment in the future of health care here.”
