Sinai's Project Nikki
Each year, the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Aurora Sinai
Medical Center cares for up to 80 micro preemies – babies who enter the
world weighing less than 3 pounds. Providing these babies and
their families with access to state-of-the art technology that supports
infant growth and parent child bonding is critical in those first months
of life.
We have a special commitment to make sure that every
high-risk newborn baby we deliver not only survives but also thrives.
Providing our most fragile babies with access to the best technology
available is our highest priority
To support positive health outcomes, Aurora Sinai Medical Center
would like to purchase 8 Giraffe OmniBeds®. The unique design of
the Giraffe OmniBed provides a state-of-the-art microenvironment that
combines the advantages of a double-walled incubator with the easy access
advantage of an open bed radiant warmer. The bed easily converts between
an incubator and open bed warmer with the touch of a button. This reduces
stress on the infant, staff and family members by eliminating the need to
transfer the baby between incubators and warmers. Another advantage is
that less equipment is needed for care-giving, cleaning, service and
storage.
These beds will stop the need to transfer premature infants, at risk
for complications due to their fragile state, from bed to bed, as is the
current practice with the older incubators. As the number of NICU patients grows,
Aurora plans to replace all of the older units with the highly superior
Giraffe OmniBeds.
We are proud to introduce Project Nikki
To help this effort, we are proud to introduce Project
Nikki. The initiative will raise contributions to purchase beds, while
increasing community understanding about Aurora Sinai Medical Center's NICU.
The NICU provides a quiet, secure setting equipped with advanced
technology that ensures infants and their parents receive the highest
quality care possible. Last year, Aurora Sinai delivered 2,830 infants; of
these, 360 were special needs and premature babies cared for in the
neonatal intensive care unit. The introduction of Giraffe OmniBeds will
move the NICU a significant step forward in its capacity to provide
state-of-the-art care to Milwaukee's most fragile infants and their
families.
