Technology
Quality care demands investment in research, new equipment and dedicated professionals
Medical
technology and more effective ways to diagnose and treat disease are rapidly
progressing. Gifts from generous donors enable Aurora to purchase
state-of-the-art equipment and offer cutting-edge treatment that improve
patient outcomes.
Gamma Knife
Aurora was the first in Wisconsin to offer the Gamma Knife instrument for state-of-the-art brain tumor surgery without a scalpel. The Gamma Knife uses precise, targeted radiation to destroy brain tumors and abnormal blood vessels deep within the brain without a single incision. It is a treatment option for many patients whose conditions were previously inoperable because of lesion location or other factors.
Groundbreaking application of genetics
Aurora is collaborating with a clinical genetic information systems company and a biotechnology company on a groundbreaking, large-scale application of genetic medicine to cardiovascular care. The program will use genetic data to develop individualized patient care plans designed to prevent the occurrence or advancement of cardiovascular disease. The program is expected to also reduce costly and potentially deadly surgical complications. Aurora sees the effort as a first step in establishing an advanced, patient-specific cardiovascular disease risk detection and prevention program. The success of this predictive patient care model can then be applied to every major disease, including osteoporosis and diabetes.
Advanced technology to improve sinus surgery
For thousands of people who are plagued with chronic sinusitis or who have suffered complications from sinusitis, such as abscesses or visual impairment, advanced technology is now available that allows for better, more complete surgical solutions. The InstaTrak image guidance system is a state-of-the-art technology used by Aurora otolaryngologists (ear, nose and throat physicians) to better navigate the sinus cavity during endoscopic sinus surgery.
