How we know if we're succeeding
Measuring ourselves: Influenza vaccination
The basic facts
- Influenza (flu) is a highly contagious viral infection of the nose,
throat and lungs that is easily spread from person to person
- Influenza can be prevented with an annual vaccination
- The vaccine is highly effective and can prevent complications and even
death
- Medical research has shown that among people at high risk for the flu
and its complications, 1 life is saved with every 250 flu shots given
Aurora Health Care is committed to increasing the number of influenza
vaccinations (flu shots) given, especially among those people at higher risk for
complications.
Our mission is to increase the number of influenza vaccinations given,
especially among those people at higher risk for complications – for example,
healthy children 6-23 months of age, adults and children with chronic health
conditions or weakened immune systems, and adults over age 50.
We measure the percent of our high-risk patients (those at higher risk
for the flu and its complications) who are vaccinated.
In the 2006/2007 flu season, 58% of our high-risk patients received
their influenza vaccination.

n = number of patients in sample measured
