Financial aspects of your health care

Questions & answers for patients

Q: I don't have insurance and may have trouble paying my bill. What can I do?
Financial counselors at our hospitals can provide an estimate of costs for the services you need, review benefit programs for which you may qualify, discuss payment options with you and, if necessary, set up mutually agreeable payment plans for your bill. You may also call and request to speak to a financial counselor at 800-958-6202 for your hospital bill or 877-576-3544 for your physician bill. [ Information on Aurora's Helping Hands program ]

Q:

Why am I getting a bill for the services of a doctor I did not see?

A:

You probably were seen by a nurse practitioner or physician assistant. The medical claims need to be billed by a practicing physician. Therefore, the supervising doctor would have billed your charges. Also, physicians such as radiologists who interpret or read your tests may have provided services related to your care, even though you didn't see them.

Q:

Why does my statement say I am responsible for a charge over the "usual, customary and reasonable" when my insurance company states that I am not responsible for anything?

A:

If your insurance company is not fully covering the charges for your care from Aurora, you are considered responsible for those charges.

Q:

My attorney is requesting a copy of my bill and cannot get it. What is the problem?

A:

Because the confidentiality of your medical records is our utmost concern, we never release these records without your written consent. You will need to provide a medical release statement to authorize us to release information to your attorney. Please call Customer Service to make these arrangements. Dial 800-958-6202 regarding hospital bills, or 877-576-3544 regarding physician bills.

Q:

Can you bill my former spouse for the balance? We are divorced and the court has ordered my former spouse to pay our child's bill.

A:

Aurora does not bill any 3rd parties. Therefore, the parent who brings the child to us for treatment is the parent who will receive the bill. To eliminate any confusion, we bill directly to the patient's address at the time of service, provided the patient is properly registered.

Q:

I was involved in an accident and would like Aurora to bill directly to my auto insurance carrier for these services.

A:

Aurora does not bill to any 3rd-party insurance. You are responsible to pay the cost of the health care services we provided to you. We will bill you directly and look to you for payment. You will need to settle with your automobile insurance carrier separately. We can bill your health insurance and they can seek repayment from your auto insurance.

Q:

My hospital bill shows both a room charge and a nursing charge for each day of my hospital stay. Are you double-billing me for these services?

A:

Aurora Health Care separates the daily room charge from the cost of nursing care provided. We believe that it is more equitable and fair to charge a daily rate based on the amount of nursing care required for each patient rather than one flat rate.

Q:

Why must I get several bills for just one hospital stay? Can't these be consolidated?

A:

Because of the varying types of information included in the bills, and the rules and regulations governing hospital and physician billing, Aurora's hospital and physician charges are billed separately. Also, please understand that some of the professionals who provided your care, such as surgeons, radiologists and anesthesiologists, are in private practice and must bill you separately. Aurora does not complete the billing for all physicians who may have treated you.

Q:

When is my payment due?

A:

Your due date appears in the upper right hand box on your statement. Payment in full is due by that date, unless you contact us to make other repayment arrangements.

Q:

What if I can't pay the full amount of my bill?

A:

Partial payment of your total outstanding balance without an installment agreement will not hold your account in good standing. If you wish to discuss payment options, please call 800-958-6202 for your hospital bill or 877-576-3544 for your physician bill
