Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center of Aurora Health Care Metro, Inc.St. Luke's Patient TowerHome | About the St. Luke's Patient Tower | Quick facts | Take a video tour | 360 degree virtual tours Why St. Luke's heart care model is betterYou can't separate the heart from the rest of the bodyThat's why you can't separate heart care from the rest of the hospital. There's a very big difference between a stand-alone heart hospital and one that is attached to the region's major tertiary care center. "If you face complications or non-heart related ailments, the specialists on staff at the stand-alone facilities work elsewhere and need to travel to treat the patient," said Dr. David Kress, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at St. Luke's. "At the Patient Tower those specialists are down the hall." Nearly 90% of the time, chest pain does not mean a heart problem. Patients are much better off going to an ER that can treat whatever the problem might be. High volumes mean better outcomesIn 2003, St. Luke's Medical Center performed nearly 11,000 cardiac procedures, nearly 3 times the number at any other hospital in the Milwaukee area. The New England Journal of Medicine reported that 123 out of 128 studies found lower mortality at high volume hospitals. The physician authors concluded, "... most patients facing...surgery have no way of knowing the relative quality of the hospitals near them. In the absence of other information...patients undergoing selected cardiovascular procedures can significantly reduce their risk of operative death by selecting a high volume hospital."
