The goal is to provide best care practices to patients suffering an acute coronary syndrome. Best care practice is based on current American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guidelines. Teamwork key to improving care of chest pain patientsMany area residents consider themselves fortunate to be able to live in Washington County. Aurora Medical Center, along with public and private emergency medical services (EMS) companies, have set up a system to ensure that our community hasn’t given up access to internationally-recognized medical care in exchange for the joy of living in the beautiful Kettle Moraine area. For instance, we are developing a systematic approach to care using the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guidelines for management of patients with STEMI. STEMI Protocol is being used in many areas to promote the prompt treatment of individuals who are experiencing a heart attack. Using a 12-lead EKG in the field, EMS personnel are transmitting the results to Aurora Medical Center for evaluation and interpretation. If someone is determined to be having this specific type of heart attack, EMS can be rerouted to the Cath Lab at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, where the patient is directly admitted, instead of losing precious minutes in a local emergency department. The quicker an angioplasty is performed for a STEMI heart attack, the sooner blood flow is restored, resulting in more heart muscle saved. Aurora St. Luke’s has a “door-to-balloon” time of 58 minutes – the area’s best – well below the American College of Cardiology benchmark of 90 minutes for STEMI patients. EMS personnel and hospitals alike all share the common goal of providing the best medical care for the people in our community. It is why we’re working on creating programs that emphasize more integrated care from the moment someone calls for emergency assistance to the time they receive treatment at our hospital. |
