Patient rights for children

Our goal is to give you the best possible care. You need to be able to talk with your nurses and doctors and ask questions if you don't understand. You and your parents are to be informed of these rights and in writing

  • You are all given the same care no matter what color you are, believe in God or not, are young or old, have money or not, or have special health problems or not
  • You have the right to not have others tell your stories and you should not tell theirs
  • You will get care in a clean, safe and secure place
  • You will receive care as soon as you are admitted to the hospital. If you have pain, it will be evaluated and treated
  • You are allowed timeouts and to be informed if more restraining care is needed. The least restrictive care will be given, unless you are harming yourself or other children
  • You can refuse care and medicine, but then you and your parents will be instructed on how this may affect your care. then you and your parents are responsible for care not received
  • You will not be given any more medicine than is needed to treat your problem
  • You and/or your parents can refuse to have any experimental treatments done
  • You and/or your parents can request that a judge decide if your hospitalization is needed
  • You and/or your parents have a right to participate in decision making about your care
  • You have the right to report staff who do not allow you to have these rights
  • You are able to receive and open your own mail
  • You are able to receive and open your own mail
  • You are able to decide if you want to be videotaped or not while in the hospital
  • You are able to follow your religious beliefs
  • You an look at select parts of your chart with your parents and/or your doctor and nurses
  • You can be paid for any work you do at the hospital except for cleaning your room
  • You can wear clothes from home and have them washed if you need it
  • You have a place to keep your belongings

Rights that may be altered based on your level of safety or your treatment needs as decided by your doctor:

  • You can use the phone
  • You can have visitors every day. You can have your family, clergy and lawyer visit. You can have your friends visit along with your parents
  • You can bathe and go to the bathroom on your own as long as you are safe to do this on your own
