Available at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center, Aurora Sinai Medical Center and Aurora Women's Pavilion of Aurora West Allis Medical Center.

The Tertiary Access Program (TAP) was developed to create an easy method for referring physicians and their patients to obtain highly specialized care. The program provides the best acute tertiary care available, serving patients from throughout Wisconsin, northern Illinois, and Michigan's upper peninsula, where such resources may not exist.

Communication with the referring physician involves the plan of care and the return of the patient to the community for follow-up and continuation of care, when appropriate.

When a physician finds it necessary for a patient to be transferred from a local community hospital for tertiary care, TAP conveniently offers:

  • A toll-free referral line, answered 24 hours per day by a TAP representative who is a registered nurse
  • Simplicity of patient transfer to Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center, Aurora Sinai Medical Center or the Aurora Women's Pavilion of Aurora West Allis Medical Center
  • A program directed by a tertiary access coordinator who is an RN trained in critical care
  • Board-certified, fellowship-trained critical care physicians and other specialists who are on-call 24 hours a day and available to consult with referring physicians, accept patient transfers and manage all aspects of inpatient care (upon request)
  • A wide array of specialists, many trained in subspecialty fellowships, available for consultation and intervention
  • A resource directory of specialists, hospitals and clinics that work with TAP
  • An increased level of communication and support for the family of the patient

The Tertiary Access Program also assists with outpatient specialist referrals and specialty consultations.

Throughout TAP, each physician understands the importance of timely and continuing communication to the referring physician, patient and family

A program representative is available 24 hours a day to assist referring physicians in contacting specialists for consultation or making arrangements for patient transfer.
